i went to my first big band concert last night and i am still jumpin! i love the music, but being there live is a whole different thing.
help me out by suggesting some flicks that feature or center around big bands, the 30s-40s, and dancing.
the ones i like that come to mind are:
- swing kids
- sweet and lowdown
MasterLcZ can probably supply you with a list of the best movies that feature Benny Goodman, Duke Ellington, Tommy Dorsey and other big-band bandleaders.
I would start with Busby Berkeley's 1943 The Gang's All Here, which features Benny Goodman and his orchestra, along with Alice Faye and Carmen Miranda, who dances in a hat with a million bananas.
For the Boys, with Better Midler and James Caan.
Not the best movie (although definately a tearjerker), but great music
Sun Valley Serenade- Glenn Miller
Orchestra Wives - Glenn Miller
The Gang's All Here - Benny Goodman
Springtime in the Rockies - Harry James
Those are the only ones I can think of right now.
While searching for some for you, I came upon this page. I don't think too many of them are available on VHS, much less DVD, but it's a start for you!
