It's a good choice- Burris a decent man and probably above suspicion. My advice to him would be to announce NOW that he is NOT going to run for the seat in 2010 and that he will accept the appointment only as a placeholder till then.
And I know you know this Papa, but he does not need to be "Confirmed" by anyone. If Blago names him, he is the senator. The senate has rumbled about voting not to seat him but the senate isn't really known for sticking to it's guns.

Apparently, because of a court case involving Adam Clayton Powell and the House, the Senate cannot refuse to seat him.
But, in the latest wrinkle to the melodrama, the Illinois Attorney General can refuse to certify the governor's selection.

Madigan thought that Blago would blink, but he did not, so now you have a duly elected governor exercising his legal authority and also his obligation by appointing Burris. I do not see how he can not be seated. If he is not, then we might be falling down a slippery slope where Congress decides itself who can be a member.

The fact is that the man is going to have to work with those people if he expects to get anything done for Illinois and all he's doing right now is pi$$ing them off. If he played the high hand right now he could just sit back and wait till decisions were made on Blago and then be named by almost anyone else. They'd be happy to do it and he'd come out on top. By not 'playing the game' he's turning himself into a lame duck.
