I am a grumpy old man, and I never see movies. This morning my wife suggested that we see the Charlie movie. I grew up watching Willie Wonka and it was hotter than hell, so I said why not?
Tim Burton is a genius and sends Johnny Depp the Oscar. These people take my childhood and reinvent it and make the world of chocolate come alive.
The kid who plays Charlie smiles his way into our hearts. The grandparents make you feel great about your own old parents.
F, C11, C10 and C7 loved it.
I recommend this movie to even Namo and Dollypop!

Posted: 7/18/05 at 12:04amWhy would Johnny Depp get an Oscar for this performance? I really, really like the film, but it makes me sick to think about Johnny getting recognition for it.

Because it's not easy to portray Charlie the way he did.....
Plus Oscars don't always have to be the touching dramatic ones...remember My Cousin Vinny's win for Best Supporting Actress?

Oh, I think it's quite easy to play Wonka as daffy. "That's weiiiird." "You're really weiiiird." "That's GROSS." Uh yeah. His Wonka doesn't deserve the same place in cinema history as Tom Hanks' Forrest Gump.
What's difficult is playing Wonka as both in and out touch with reality, which is what Gene Wilder did. I suspect that many Academy members (and critics, obviously) would resent the notion of giving Depp recognition where Wilder didn't get it for his much more memorable and nuanced performance.

Dame, that's how I saw it.........I do think he took the quirkiness of Michael, and made it his own.......
still liked the movie, and didn't bother me a bit

Posted: 7/18/05 at 11:15amE - My wife said after the movie that Depp must have based his character on some "real" person and now I definitely see the Michael Jackson resemblance. However, I did not see the kids as “threatened” like they would be at Neverland.

I agree brdlwyr ("I did not see the kids as “threatened” like they would be at Neverland.")
I liked the movie a lot! Saw it Friday afternoon with my 16 yr. old son; he's rather childlike in many ways (nonverbal, autistic), and I was counting on this being one of those movies that would hold his attention at the theater. It did. He really seemed to enjoy it, actually laughing at times, and some of his favorite parts seemed to be the songs. :) Can't say I blame him -- I enjoyed them too. It struck me later that he is a big fan of The Wizard of Oz, which we have on video and which he often chooses to watch here at home; I think there's a bit of room for comparison there ... going from the greys of Charlie's house into the bright, colorful world inside the chocolate factory is a bit like going from Dorothy's Kansas into Oz.
Admit that I've never seen the Gene Wilder film. Maybe I'll rent it sometime!

evelyn nesbit- I agree that it wouldn't make as much sense for him to win an Oscar for this, but as for playing the part being easy? I dunno
Also, about the whole based on a real person deal with MJ, I watchd Jay Leno when Johnny Depp was being interviewd and he said be based Willy Wonka on childhood talk show hosts..

Posted: 7/18/05 at 12:28pmI thought about seeing this, but it looks like Johnny looks really creepy in this movie. Also the cinematography just looks creepy. And I'm not really into that. I love the original though. I mean, you can't beat Gene Wilder in that role.

I really enjoyed it, and although I was unsure of Johnny's choices at first, once I understood what he was going for, I thought it was brilliant.
My main gripe is that I wish they had allowed each child to have a song. I guess I was just pining for Veruca's "I Want It Now" number from the original.
Overall, however, I still prefer the original. It had a magic to it that this one lacks. I was thinking that maybe it's due to the remake's reliance on special effects. Although it LOOKS great, it's just not *quite* as effervescent as the original.

One word:
MUMBLER!!!!!
that was my favorite parts..when he yelled at the kid for mumbling..my kind of humor--random and having nothing to do with anything else...
just like "I like grapes" ahah

Not the strongest argument for Oscar winners, Sally...rumors were flying that Palance was drunk and read the wrong name. How else to explain Tomei's win over Joan Plowright, Judy Davis, Miranda Richardson, and Vanessa Redgrave. She most likely won for being the only American and the most attractive in the category. The academy is notorious for voting for babes....
You might be better served by mentioning Kevin Kline for A Fish Called Wanda, Dianne Wiest for either Hannah and Her Sisters or Bullets Over Broadway or Martin Landau for Ed Wood...supporting actors seem to have a better chance at Oscars for comedies, though Nicholson and Hunt both won for As Good As It Gets
