what your story for when you came out of the closet?
how did you do it?
how did they respond?
where were you?
was it hard?
how old were you?
how old were you whene you knew you were gay?
and so on........

Oh this'll be fun...

I was in school talking with a friend. I was asking if some boy in school was there, and she said "You really like him, don't you?" I knew what she meant by this, and it was that moment that I admitted it to her and to myself that I did. All of a sudden, i no longer felt like a freak with all this unanswered emotions that caused the emotional breakdowns. I told her not to tell anyone, but the next day, I gradually told my friends, till finally it wasn't a secret anymore.
I was 15.
But I was 16 when I came out to my family. That was a different story. Most of them accepted this fact, and to this day, 15 years later, my father still won't.

"Do you know what pledge time is, Andrew"? said the PBS Executive. "Yes", Lloyd Webber replied. "My 50th birthday special must be one program that gets done a lot." "No", mused the man from PBS heedlessy. "Not so much. Our Stephen Sondheim Carnegie Hall concert. That's a big one." Spoons, forks and knives seemed suddenly to suspend their motion in horror, all around the table.

I am actually in the process of writing a play about this topic. If anyone would like to share more detailed stories I am collecting them to add to my play. I am starting work on my senior project. I am a theatre major at the University of Illinois. If you would like to share and help PLEASE email me at awhite3@uiuc.edu Thanks in advance!

(Martha Graham from a letter to Agnes de Mille) "There is a vitality, a life force, a quickening That is translated through you into action, And because there is only one of you in all time, This expression is unique. If you block it, It will never exist through any other medium And be lost. The world will never have it. It is not your business to determine how good it is, Nor how valuable it is, Nor how it compares with other expressions. It is your business to keep it yours, clearly and directly, To keep the channel open. You do not even have to believe in yourself or your work. You have to keep open and aware Directly to the urges that motivate you. Keep the channel open. No artist is pleased. There is no satisfaction whatever at any time. There is only a queer, divine dissatisfaction, A blessed unrest that keeps us marching And makes us more alive than others."

It's a little more in depth than just inspiration. I am writing a play based on real accounts of coming out. I am exploring how a society can base such radical judgements on a few single words. Further how someone can love a person more or devlope hatred toward a person based on personal truth. So if you are interested please email me!:)

I came out to my friends late last year. I came out to my parents this year, on January 11th. I'm too tired to recount the whole thing, but I posted about it in my LJ over here: http://www.livejournal.com/users/mertondingle/100007.html
