thanks
I've tried to do this a number of times; someone told me I needed to download a DVD decrypter. I was trying to do with burned DVD's rather than with bought, "real" DVDs, and my assumption after a big lack of success is that it WILL work with real DVDs. Google around for a free DVD decrypter, and that should help you to upload it to your computer.
A DVD has different files...it has vob and ifo files rather than the mpg/avi/mov files that people are used to seeing. It's a bit complicated...

I don't do the video decrypting thing myself, but from what I've heard Aigoo's right- it's probably going to be a multi-step process involving less-than-legal freeware.

would i have to have a dvd drive or would a cd drive work?
If you can play DVD's on your computer, your CD drive should do fine. You can have a DVD player without having a DVD burner. But it's still very complicated.
There are computers that have a DVD copier...but you don't sound like you have that. Even so, it would have to be an unprotected DVD.
Go and google iRiverter. I use it to get DVD files onto my iRiver. The screensize will be sort of small...but it'll still be the video.

i just downloaded a dvd decrypter, but it says no readers detected, so i guess i cant do it that way

Aigoo, what's an iriverter?
it's a program, that rips the files off the dvd and converts them into a specific type of file: .avi
The resolution is also automatically adjusted so that it fits onto the iRiver's screen, so it'll be a tad bit small.

ooo! Ok- while were at it...I'll ask my question. It may be the same as other people's but since I don't understand, could you possibly use non-computer lingo?
I want to take something I have on DVD (that I can watch on TV) and copy it onto another DVD.
I do not have a DVD burner on my computer.
Howerever, I don't know the difference but- DVD's that I can watch on my computer and NOT on TV, I can make a copy- why?

You need to first add the DVD to the computer to get it on a diffrent disc. You have a DVD burner just not one with two outlets to do dirrect copying.

To answer the first question, I think you may need a device that interfaces between your DVD player and your computer.
Remember the old "Snappy"? I had a device made by Dazzle that would interface between my DVD/VCR and my computer. You could then stream your video into the computer, and then edit the video, and then turn around and burn the video.
The software that comes with these types of devices allow you to make a DVD (must have a DVD burner, of course), or a VCD, or MPG files, or streaming files for the internet.
There may be software that allows you to interface directly between the DVD player and the PC. My knowledge is limited. But you generally need to have the right "plugs". That's why I had that Dazzle device. It accepted those plugs from DVD/VCR players on one end, and then you had a USB cable on the other end that would go into the PC.
I think if you go to a computer shop (like Best Buy), someone there should be able to help you out. I've never had luck with any of those free download things. I've tried a couple of times, and they always screwed up my computer.

Hey Lauren. Thank you. I found something called Xilisoft DVD Ripper. I put my dvd in my computer and it encodes it and compresses it and makes it into a mpeg file!
I just used it. I had a scene from What About Joan where Donna Murphy sings "Hit Me With a Hot Note" and I converted it into a mpeg!
