Let's just say I was going to choose a song from a musical that was currently on broadway for my college auditions. And I know what your thinking...no it's not from wicked or rent...or hairspray.

(I'm not going to say what the song is because if I do choose to do it I don't want a million other people doing it too. I mean since a lot of you are auditioning at the same schools as I am...I'm sure a lot of you would feel the same way. hehe..)

But anyway it's not even the theme song of a show or even a popular song that people would know even if they didn't know the show well.

I feel like the song really shows off my voice well. And it just seems like the perfect song to contrast with the other songs I already have in mind for auditions.

So my question is, do you think it's absolutely out of the question to do a song from a show that's currently on broadway?

or do you look at like I do...if a song is right for you and you do it well, then you should go for it because you're performance is what's going to matter the most not what song you pick (then i again i wouldn't go in there belting out "defying gravity" haha but you get what I'm saying)

please tell me what you think. Thanks :)

Well... the general rule is no. But if you feel strongly about it, do it. It's also hard to know without knowing the song, so that's about as far as you can go. Sorry I can't be of more help.

I think it's more than a 'general rule', it's an accepted rule at most schools, even if it's unwritten. The choice is up to you but I think you're making a mistake, regardless of how well you sing it. As someone who has assisted with auditions for the past two years, I can tell you that you'll be putting yourself at a distinct disadvantage at many schools where auditors get very tired of hearing songs that should be known by prospective students as no-no's. MT admissions is so selective as it is, why would you even want to take the chance?

Erinrebecca, I agree with what your saying. But I think that's true at some schools more than others. Both my acting teacher and my voice teacher (both used to teach at the hartt school) said that it would be a def. no at some schools and could be okay at others. Don't worry I'll be careful with that. I'm going to gather some more professional opinions before I decide.
