jeremiah 7 (niv)
23 but i gave them this command: obey me, and i will be your god and you will be my people. walk in all the ways i command you, that it may go well with you.
24 but they did not listen or pay attention; instead, they followed the stubborn inclinations of their evil hearts. they went backward and not forward.
25 from the time your forefathers left egypt until now, day after day, again and again i sent you my servants the prophets.
26 but they did not listen to me or pay attention. they were stiff-necked and did more evil than their forefathers.'
27 "when you tell them all this, they will not listen to you; when you call to them, they will not answer.
28 therefore say to them, 'this is the nation that has not obeyed the lord its god or responded to correction. truth has perished; it has vanished from their lips.

Again, the Lord reminds Israel that he sends Prophets to teach them, to guide them and to warn them so they can correct their course. Obviously the information was given to them in an understandable fashion because they are willfully choosing to disobey.
Pride is ruling their hearts. Their gaze is set on other things and their "stiff necks" will not allow them to look in another direction, or bow their heads in humility. The prophetic burden is a heavy one because Israel has become so disobedient by this point. And another captivity is looming ahead.
Yet the Lord continues to warn them in hopes they will listen and make better choices.
That is why I believe it is valid to expect that he works through a living prophet today. He is still God and he still wants us to understand His Plan for our happiness.

papa, just curious, is there a reason you use different versions of verses each day? do you like some versions better than others for certain passages?
it's kinda random. i wish i could say that i review each one and decide on the version i like best, but i don't have the time to do it (nor have i read enough to have an informed opinion on them). so i try to keep using different versions, that way it never falls into a rut of being too much of one thing. plus, different folks like different versions so this way there's a chance that they might see their fave version.
different strokes for different folks.
