daily scripture 7 march 06

king james version

the book of the prophet isaiah

chapter 55

10 for as the rain cometh down, and the snow from heaven, and returneth not thither, but watereth the earth, and maketh it bring forth and bud, that it may give seed to the sower, and bread to the eater:

11 so shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which i please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto i sent it.

re: daily scripture 7 march 06

The metaphor of God's Word as a rainy day has always been an interesting one to me.

For the intended readers of this passage (who lived in a HIGLY rural world that relied on farming for the majority of their income), rain was always welcome. This passage is a call to desire more of God's Word in the same way there is a desire for rain. If it was said in modern day terms, it might read:

When your company sends a direct deposit to your account, you can eventually spend that money. In the same way, God's Word sends a direct deposit to our hearts -- and that money can used to prosper us.

It also strikes me that rain is something that most of us modern non-farmers complain about even though we know it's necessary to sustain life. So too the word......

Rain and snow are catalysts in growth but require the partnership of the soil, the seed and the farmer to produce a harvest.

What we receive into our hearts we must nourish to bring forth an abundance which empowers us as individuals, then as families and communities. That empowerment, when used for good, produces great joy in the heavens.

The parable of the mustard seed is another illustration. The seed had to use all it was given to flourish. If it had not accepted the rain and used it with the soil and allowed the farmer's care it would not become the wonderfully large plant it had potential to be.
