Okay here's my prob...

I'm chubby. I sing and i act. But i don't dance. I never have. I just don't. I can accept that; its not that i can't- its that it would look ridiculous. Now, my friends think its the dumbest excuse EVER and say i should just take a stupid dance lesson but they don't know where i am coming from as they have 'ballet' bodies :P
This phobia of not wanting to dance is killing me. Does anyone else feel like this?
What should i do? To be brutally honest, i'd LOVE to take dance lessons- but i feel like everyone would be judging me.
Should i go? Should i just accept the fact that i will never have the dancers body and just stick with my acting/singing...? i know that not having dance training on a resume will limit me from tons of shows but...when yah don't got it...
You guys are my counsellors, and my comp chair is my couch :P i seek guidance :P

I have to agree with your friends. You should just take the classes. It really doesn't matter if you have a "ballet body." I don't think that people would judge you, but even if they do, what does it matter what they say? Don't let people keep you from doing what you want to do.

News Flash!! You're judged constantly in this profession. By people who know what they're talking about...and by people who don't. You only have to read a few threads on these message boards to see that. If you're constantly worried about what other people think and say about you...then you're defeated before you start.

Auditions are nothing but about being judged, by the director, the casting director, the producers...etc. Not to mention being judged by the audience...once you land a role.

If you feel that dance classes are going to make you a better and a more versatile performer...then take them. Besides, being able to get over being self-conscious in a dance class...only helps when you're on a stage or in a rehearsal room when you're auditioning.

When I read your entry it reminded me of me!

I was in the same boat as you, bigger than all my friends, and scared to dance because heaven forbid someone might laugh at me. Well I started taking dances lessons specially built for girls who are older and need to know how to dance and I know love dance and miss it when I don't have class.
My advice: GO FOR IT!!!!

Sorry about the life story, just having one of those days.

Hey there...(welcome to the boards, by the way)
I understand your problem completly....I'm the same way. What I did was I called around and I found several dance studios. I explained my situation and I actually found a couple places where they offer "plus-sized" instruction for people who don't feel comfortable starting off right away with a bunch of size zeros. It really built up my confidence. Maybe you could find something like that!

catieElphie1, thanks for youe help- i'm definitely looking around at different studios. I'll go up to them at the front desk and be like,

"excuse me, i was wondering about your class sizes"

and they'll be like,

"oh, they're about 15-20 ppl a class"

then i'll be like,

"i mean, how big are the people in your classes" :P

in all seriousness though, its SO comforting to hear that there are people with the same problem as me. Its not the singing or the acting..its that damn DANCING :p

heh heh heh...I've found that alot of dance studios are really open to people in your (our) situation becuase they want the money and they've found a demographic that they can sell to. Hope it all works out
(oh and word of advice) even if you can't find anything, jsut do it anyway. I know you're uncomfrotable..but there are so many things that can come of dance lessons...(and, as an added bonus, I lost a bunch of weight when I started dancing). Don't let people push you around. Go for it.
If you're concerned...Ebay offers a wealth of dance supplies for plus sized girls....which is nice b/c you can get cute cotumes for cheap! Also, I think that getting over your fear of dance will help you get in the long run.....becuase we all know about stage fright.

Another (last, I promise) suggestion...If you can't find a dance class you like, call a gym. Places like Curves ( i don't know if you have them around your area) and other more women-oriented gyms often offer several different kinds of work out classes for bigger ladies. If you can't find a dance class, sign up for an areobics class. It's not dance, but it will get you into shape and improve your timing. YOu might even consider looking into an areobics/dance class..while not dance lessons, it will improve your skills and you'll gain confidence along the way
