Opinion threads, yup.
Other places...well, not so much.
This is not really what you were talking about but....everytime i go to the movies i either here "defying gravity", "Popular", or both in the movie radio thing before the movie starts
I think it just seems like it. Once a phrase becomes frequent in your head, you do see it more often, even if it may have been common just as much before.

True Liz. I think I heard "Popular" more. The girl in my voice lessons is singing the song, so I hear it every week. And then I went to a restaurant that same night and saw this goth chick, in full makeup and piercings, singing Popular with her goth friends. I was like, wow, Wicked has def. grossed all boundaries.
my sister said she heard DG at a jets game, i guess one of the commentators started singing or something
I heard Popular in a movie theatre lobby recently, as well.
I'm sure one of the major airlines will be picking it up SOON, and Popular will be for some clothing line for young girls.

I was applying for a job at a movie theater and i heard "defying gravity" the guy before the song was like "here's defying gravity from the smash broadway musical wicked about two witches from oz, lets listen as elphaba tells us how she's going to defy gravity" I was like "this isnt a movie"
Heard Defying Gravity yesterday while waiting for Harry Potter. It wasn't the cast album though -- it was one woman singing. It was kind of faint, so I couldn't tell who it was or even if the version was any good or not, but I definitely know it wasn't Idina and Kristen.
I've heard "Popular" too at the movie theatres before a show begins. Not surprising, since Universal Studios owns the rights and will promote this stage show wherever they think it could help sell more tickets.
"Defying Gravity" is a cliche phrase that you'll find popping up in material that was written (or aired) before "Wicked" came out. I actually NOTICE it more now, but I don't think it's being used necessarily more now. I just have awareness of it. There are even a couple of older songs with that same title.
(Yes, TITLES can't be copyrighted, only the music and lyrics. That's why there are about a million songs out there called, "I Love You." ...Also movies with the exact same title that aren't remotely the same story, etc. Like the horror movie "Wicked" that's out on DVD now. Not even the same thing.)
I heard "Defying Gravity" the last three times I went to the movies. Like I needed another reason to hate the pre-show...

My sister heard DG the other day when she saw Harry Potter.
