i don't know either property well enough to really compare, but this made me laugh. It's amazing what a passion will do for a driven person...and also amazing what kind of independent films at least get STARTED in TX, even if never finished. From an e-mail bulletin board that advertises theatre and film opportunities (i didn't correct any typos, by the way):
If you have seen Wicked: The Musical, or Xena: Warrior Princess, than
you are aware of the similarities between the characters and overall
storyline. For this project we will be using selected songs from
Wicked: The Musical, including "Popular", "What is this feeling?"
and "For Good". Gabrielle will be mirroring the character of Glinda,
but in a slightly more subtle fashion. Gabrielle is perky, but not
THAT perky! And Ephaba will be replaced with Xena. The overall story
of Wicked will be replaced with the story told during the six seasons
of Xena: Warrior Princess. We obviously can't include everything, but
we will be picking some of the most memorable moments from the show
to include in the musical. Some of the words in the songs have been
changed to fit the story of Xena and Gabrielle.
NO FORMAL MUSICAL OR DANCING EXPERIENCE REQUIRED! We aren't looking
for the next Celine Dion or Britney Spears, but rather someone who
can at least carry a tune (or lip-synch) and keep up with simplistic
choreography. Everything else can be fine-tuned in pre/post-
production and with PRACTICE! So please don't be intimidated because
it's a musical.
This is first and foremost a COMEDY/SPOOF, and although there are
some dramatic elements, you will need to be able to laugh at yourself
and have fun. In the end, the tone of the musical will be more like
Spamalot than Wicked, but there are definitely serious moments along
the way.
We would love to find someone at least vaguely familiar with
Xena:Warrior Princess and/or Wicked, or willing to learn. Also, if
you know anything about the show, than you know that Xena and
Gabrielle had a "special" friendship. lol. We will be making light of
this in the film, and require people that are not uncomfortable with
this aspect of the story. If you have seen the show or know anything
about it, than you know EXACTLY what we are referring to. lol. Most
of it is VERY comical and lighthearted. We don't care if you're gay
or straight ? it makes NO difference in this film, because it's not
about that. However, the two characters do have some "moments" that
normal friends don't have, and it's impossible to overlook them. So
if you are in ANY way uncomfortable with this concept, please don't
apply. Again, this is a comedy based on the actual show, and girl-on-
girl action is NOT the focus of this film. But if you strongly
opposed Ellen marrying Portia, than this probably isn't the film for
you. :p This isn't anything you can't show you're parents as long as
they are either open-minded and/or Democrats. :p
We would love for you to be a part of it!

Will: They don't give out awards for helping people be gay... unless you count the Tonys.
"I guarantee that we'll have tough
times. I guarantee that at some point
one or both of us will want to get out.
But I also guarantee that if I don't
ask you to be mine, I'll regret it for
the rest of my life..."
