Well, according to my vet, possums can
get rabies, but once infected, they usually die off immediately and don't pass it on. Like field mice, they're too small to survive with rabies.
Somebody here remarked that they like raccoons more - but raccoons will carry rabies and (at one time) if they allowed you to get close enough to see them, the odds were that they were already infected. A sane, uninfected raccoon, would rarely let a human get that close. Nowadays (love that word) their protected habitats have shrunk and they've started invading trash cans in back yards and on decks.
