It began this summer when a squirrel jumped out of the dumpster at my face when I tried to take our garbage out, it worsened when mice chewed a hole in the wall under our kitchen sink and proceeded to steal our dogs' food in the middle of the night, but this story clinches it. ::shudder::

after only 4 hours or so of waving a broom at it, throwing a towel and/or a bucket over it, and my brother yelling at it to leave, my dad called his friend jimmy, who came over, picked it up by the tail, and put it outside.
it made a mess in the bathroom! it **** everywhere and the whole downstairs stinks now

This was so much fun to read! 
I hate possums. One got in my chicken coop a few years back, and it was dark, so all i saw was a mass of fuzz. Thinking it was a chicken, I reached in to check on it, and the giant rodent turned and bared its teeth at me! I nearly peed myself.
On another note, I believe that possums are unable to get rabies. Their brains haven't evolved enough since the beginning of time to affected by the disease! For something so safe and stupid, it sure is scary looking...

I'm glad you guys handled it, and that you managed to keep your sense of humor throughout. Once when I was in college I was alone in my apartment when a bat came whizzing by. I did not handle it very well.

lol... we kept the havahart trap set.
we used sliced turkey as bait... wikipedia said possums eat meat. my dad wants to see if the cat will go in it overnight. and people wonder where my brother and i get our immaturity from.

That thing is terrifying! I don't think I've seen an actual possum before. I hear about people running them over but all I see are armadillos.

Apparently, possums rarely get rabies because of their low body temperarture. They are also not rodents. They will eat damn near anything, the more rotton the better. I think they would be a whole lot cuter if they didn't have scaly rat-like tails and very pointy teeth. Plus there's that whole hissing and chattering thing.

Truth is, once they've been run over a time or two, there isn't all that much difference between a possum and an armadillo when viewed from a moving car. They're roughly the same shape and color, but possums have more fur than armadillos, which are also usually bigger in general.
Abba, don't worry - were you a real redneck, you would have made the critter your dinner. Get up early - you're going to need to let the cat out of the trap.

Well, according to my vet, possums can get rabies, but once infected, they usually die off immediately and don't pass it on. Like field mice, they're too small to survive with rabies.
Somebody here remarked that they like raccoons more - but raccoons will carry rabies and (at one time) if they allowed you to get close enough to see them, the odds were that they were already infected. A sane, uninfected raccoon, would rarely let a human get that close. Nowadays (love that word) their protected habitats have shrunk and they've started invading trash cans in back yards and on decks.

Absolutely. I was told the same thing.
Also I remember one time my baby sister was in the back yard playing. She was about 3 and she came into the house crying and holding out her hand. There was a small field mouse holding on (with his teeth) to her index finger! He fell off and ran away before anyone could think and my mom ran her to the doctor's office right away - thinking 'rabies!' of course. All the doctor did was wash it, put a little antiseptic on it and a bandaid. He said those little field mice just couldn't carry rabies.

Their babies are the size of a quarter, and so sweet and pink! I used to hold them all the time, especially when the cats bring them in still alive, or they get into the grain buckets.

This past Monday morning there was a raccoon found on one of the school buses going to my son's school in Riverdale. And we're not in the country or even in the suburbs - this was on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. The bus driver apparently had no idea how to handle the situation, and one of the 10th graders talked the driver through it.
Years ago I found a shark in the toilet and was convinced that it swam up the pipes, but it turned out that it was just one of my brother's tri color sharks that had died and was given an unsuccessful burial at sea. It may have been small (and dead), but I definitely had some Jaws moments.

So now I know what happened to my Halloween pumpkin, I guess.
I carved a fairly small pumpkin for Halloween, with an image of a cat. It did start getting a little soft. Well, last week I noticed it was in the garden and not on the porch, and I thought one of my parents thew it there, but it made no sense. So I picked it up to move it to the field and it looked like it had started to get eaten. I know we had a possum go into the recycling bin once outside. So, maybe that's what took it. I don't think our visitor cat would be able to move it or have any interest in eating something so gross.

About a year and a half ago in my last apartment we had mice problems. There was a hole behind our stove that they would come into our apartment through. One day I was in the kitchen with a glass of something when suddenly two BIG mice ran across the counter right in front of me. I dropped the glass, which shattered on the floor and I just froze for a good couple seconds. Another time in the same apartment, I woke up one morning to find a mouse crawling around in the trash can in my room.
The problem got so bad that we had to call pest control.
