came out yesterday that the pick to be health czar has pocketed $220k in the last 2 years from the health industry. on top of that it turns out that he also owes $128k in back taxes and $11k in penalties and interest.
add that to geither, the secretary of the treasury who doesn't know how to do his taxes either.
i can see why democrats have no problems with high taxes: they simply don't pay them!

Posted: 1/31/09 at 12:28pmI just rolled my eyes when I heard about this. What is wrong with these people? Do they really think stuff like this is no big deal or do they just feel they can BS their way out of it? I asked myself the same question with Richardson. I think they want to serve in the administration SO BAD they intentionally withhold the information. I say don't confirm him and hope others will learn that this is not how you play the game.Aren't these people vetted?

Actually it's not the back taxes part that is his most vexing problem because that happens to many in congress (on both sides of the aisle) all the time and it is just not reported (unless they are being vetted for something) but the following information is more of a conflict, considering the post for which he was nominated:
Health care groups paid Daschle $220K

Can someone explain what the difference between Daschle's problems (which seem like they might prevent him from being confirmed) and Geitner's, whose tax issues only caused a minor rift. Maybe it's just me, but I'd be concerned that the Treasury secretary makes mistakes on his taxes.

Posted: 1/31/09 at 11:43pmI don't think that there is a major difference. I actually feel that Geitner's problem was a bigger one than Daschle's. The political difference, however, will be Daschle's former position as Senate Majority Leader and the partisan atmosphere that continues to exist in the senate. This can the be the gotcha nomination that the Republicans have been looking for and there is no doubt that Daschle has given them a lot to work with. I think that most Republicans thought that no matter how bad a tax problem Geitner had, he was far too important to an economic recovery to not confirm.

OK I'm late to the party.
I really don't see what that Bubba Clinton-era retread brings to the table. His nomination is looking more and more like Obama's biggest blunder to date. We could easily dismiss the Geitner debacle as a beginner's mistake but the nod to Daschle makes little sense.
I hate to think that the guy I threw my support behind could possibly be a tool of the Kennedys and Clintons. My Libertarian inner circle has all but disowned me for supporting Obama/Biden and gun control.

They got caught, that's the only thing these guys are sorry about. What happened to holding these people up to higher standards. Guess that's too much to ask for.

he was also pushing his employer for an administration gig. while it probably happens all the time, it dosn't seem the best way to bring change to the government. especially since there seems to be a move to throw the blame for dashcle's troubles onto him. if that's the way they go it turns into one unscrupulous tax cheat supporting another for a position in the administration.
it just doesn't smell right

Posted: 2/3/09 at 9:56amIt doesn't make sense. Is Daschle the only one qualified to fill that post? I don't think so. I really hope they don't confirm him.

maybe it's just me, but if i were the president the last thing i would want in my administration was a guy whose own state said they didn't want him representing their needs. i can understand calling on someone who either retired or who had taken a shot at a higher office and fallen short or who was a serving rep or senator, but a guy whose people booted him after three terms in the senate? it almost seems disrespectful to the people of his state in a way.
but you're right, dottie: is he the only one there is? don't underestimate the senate's desire to close ranks around one of their own. unless he steps down, i bet he gets confirmed.

does nancy killefer's decision to take herself out of the running for white house cpo over tax problems a fraction of that facing daschle increase pressure on him to back out?

Really papa? What if his state hated him so much they elected a DEAD guy instead of him? Would it be OK to appoint him Attorney General, say?
