my new kitty

we adopted a new cat today... just thought everyone would like to see him. his name is monk and he's 12 weeks old. he's hissed at every animal we have with the exeption of the fish and took a swing at the dog.

there's nothing wrong with his eyes, it just looks funny in the picture because of the flash.
we lost my 13 year old cat lucky on monday on the way home form the vet, and the bird finnigan (damn you petco) last night, but the new cat is kinda cheering me up.

does anyone know the best way to help a kitten get used to other aniamals?

i meant he died. same with the bird.
the cat was a huge shock to us because it happened very fast but we knew the bird wasn't going to make it. she was really sick because of petco.

And the other thing about the Phantom Lady was, Bert, she realized, in the city that never sleeps... What did she realize, Kitten? That all the songs she'd listened to, all the love songs, that they were only songs. What's wrong with that? Nothing, if you don't believe in them. But she did, you see. She believed in enchanted evenings, and she believed that a small cloud passed overhead and cried down on a flower bed, and she even believed there was breakfast to be had... Where? On Pluto. Cats are creatures of habit, and your kitten is probably dealing with a lot of strange sights, smells and sounds right now. The hissing at the other animals is a defense mechanism for him, but unless he is overly aggressive, he should adjust to the other animals in time, if you socialize him with them gradually. I found when introducing my two cats to each other, I had to let them battle and fight for about a week and not get too upset about it. Unless there are real personality conflicts, cats do settle down peacefully with other animals eventually.

1 year later and my cats still hate each other? Whats up with that cat experts?!?!

yeah.. he did have a pretty stressfull day today... from the foster home, to the pound, in the car, to my grandparents house, then my house.
i just hope he gets along with the dog... she's a big lab who likes to sniff everything.

edit: dont't worry blucat. lucky and eddie play/fought for 5 years, but they still cared about eachother.

I've had cats for a long, long time and I agree completely with magruder. It would really be best for her and all of you if you introduce them VERY gradually. The best way to do this is to keep her in one room - completely separated from the other animals and people. Let the people come to her, rather than having her out there in the big scary world. The animals will get to know her scent and she theres. In time you can gradually introduce them - with you there. Be patient and don't rush this. It takes some time but it will be much less stressful on you, her, and the other animals.

Cute kitty!! He looks just like the best cat I ever had. His name was Squeeky and he would jump off the roof onto my back. Sorry about your other cat and bird. Just a reminder to anyone even thinking about it, DON'T EVER BUY A BIRD FROM PETCO, they're all sick. Petco should be made to stop selling live animals, especially birds.

Did you ever see something and say, "I just have to have it"? Sometimes a dream appears unattainable...but for anyone who's on the downside of advantage, and relying purely on courage, it's possible.

Cute Pictures! I guess it just takes time to get used to other animals, especially cats and dogs. But, if you can't teach an old cat new tricks, be glad you have a kitten because they can get used to dogs, providing the dog isn't too wild!
