I was actually diagnosed with this when I was eight or nine. It's really rare to have it at that age, but it had apparently come about somehow when I had physical therapy around the age of three because I walked pigeon-footed. As long as you do the stretches, you'll be fine. There are some nice gel pads you can put in your shoes to relieve the pain. I've used these: http://www.amazon.com/Silipos-4501-Heel-Cushions/dp/B000MKTRRK/ref=pd_sim_sbs_hpc_1 they're a bit expensive, but they work so much better than anything I've gotten from a store, and they last for several months. Also, one thing that my doctor recommended that worked really well is to use an empty soup can and roll it back and forth underneath the arch of your foot. As long as you do that and regular stretches, it's very easy to overcome.
Not a dancer, but I just went through treatment for this (ice, stretching, Advil, etc. - didn't have to do the steroid shots); PM me if you want my podiatrist's contact info.
thanks for your PM s. Very helpful.

Not a dancer but custom orthotics were the answer for me. I've worn them ever since I first had it about 15 years ago.
