question about nyu#1
Posted: 7/12/07 at 11:42amif i attend nyu in the future,i would like to double major in theatre and either journalism or art history.how ever,i'm wondering if this is possible because on the nyu site it says journalism students must double major in something from the college of arts and sciences....does this mean double majoring in a department of tisch is not allowed?thanks for any info you guys can give me.

Posted: 7/12/07 at 12:38pmI go to NYU in the drama department, and I know I knew people who were drama majors and said they were double-majoring. I know a lot of journalism classes only count as electives for drama majors, and I'm not sure if that changes if you double major in it. Some of it will depend on whether you apply to NYU as a drama or journalism major. I think the only way you could do both is if you applied to Tisch and then after your first year decided to double major. You might want to try looking at a school like Northwestern though if you really want to do both.

Posted: 7/12/07 at 1:53pmI think it really depends on the person. I know people who have done it and been fine, and others who have had trouble handling the bare minimums to graduate with only one major. I will say this though: if you decide to double major in drama and something else the only classes you will be taking will be classes that fit into one of those two areas. So, don't expect to double major in drama and journalism and also be able to take a class in history, econ, politics, or anything else. I was going to double major, and didn't do it because I decided I'd rather do more of the liberal arts thing and take a little bit of everything.

A double major will certainly be a lot of work, and remember that you are already going to have 5 days of classes. 3 for studio and 2 for your liberal arts requirements.
The extra work you would need to put in for a double major will probably curtail the amount of time you'll have to participate in the various student theatre productions.

Anything at NYU can be very stressful depending on the person, so make sure you are prepared for it. Also, I am not sure if you are allowed to double major between two schools. I think that is something you could talk to an advisor about but usually you can take electives from other schools but not major in a different one unless you apply for a transfer and switch altogether. Not sure how this would apply for Tisch they may let you branch out more.
Just make sure you get all the information before you apply so you definitely apply to the right school, they won't let you switch your application but I believe after a year you can apply to do an internal transfer.
Also, I am an education student and they have us double majoring, and between all those classes and student teaching a lot of us were very very strung out and had very little time for anything else. I imagine going to class for two majors and participating in student theatre productions would be much the same. We went from very early in the morning to very late at night and had no social lives lol so just be prepared for that type of work.

Posted: 7/15/07 at 9:11amYou definitely can double major at NYU if you're a Tisch drama student. You can choose most majors in CAS, with the assistance of your advisor. You must audition and apply to Tisch, though. You cannot apply to CAS and then want to double major in drama.

I think that, as people hve said, it's theoretically possible, but you'd have to go through a fair amount of red tape. You are officially only allowed sixteen credits (four courses, definitely not enough for a major) outside of your school, but I would think that you could talk to your advisor and work around it.
However, the vast majority of my friends who are majoring in theater have little enough free time as it is. I'm always seeing them LEAVING at midnight to go start rehearsal for a scene, and hearing horror stories about the long days at studio. They love it, of course, but it's a ton of work. I don't know that it would be such a good idea to pile another major on top of that, especially journalism, which is fairly work-intensive, as the entire program is designed to produce a portfolio of pieces to help you start out in the professional world. If I were you, I'd aim to go into Tisch not planning to double major, but just see where things lead and if you'd feel comfortable with the extra work. Good luck!

Posted: 7/16/07 at 6:01pmCeemarie, I was kind of thinking the same thing, but the more I think about it, the more I just want to focus on theatre specifically and give myself time to work and enjoy college... I don't want to spend every minute of my life in class, doing homework, or at rehearsal... It's New York City!
