it rained the day my grandmother was diagnossed with cancer last week. it was a light rain, almost as if telling us "be sad and cry now but dont be too upset beacuse things will get better". and better they did get, as grandma is feeling much better after her first chemo treatment.

it also rained the day of my grandfather's funeral 9 years ago when he died from cancer. it was a refreshing rain. papa was out of pain and free from a body that didn't work for him. it brought people together. my dad's cousin gave my little brother his jacket to stay dry.

today, the sky wept for hours. before i even woke up this morning, our sweet beautiful bombay cat, ed, was given the same diagnosis and was put to sleep. he had been limping and when the vet took an xray, ed had no bone left in his hip. it had all been eaten away by a tumor. there was nothing left to do.
the sky wept for our loss in a way it hasn't in a long time.

ed is gone and can never come back.
no more waiting for me on my bed, no more greeting me in the morning waiting for his wet food, no more purrs and meows and other ed noises that i can't even spell out, no more kisses.
no more "ed-aches", no more limping, no more pain, no more suffering.

why does doing the right thing hurt so badly?

I really enjoyed your post. Very moving, and very true. It always seems to rain during the most appropriate times.

Your cat loves you for putting him out of pain. You did the right thing. It's so difficult.
