I might actually regain the tiny amount of respect I had for Bush during the 2000 campaign if he does this. Anyone read James Baker's op-ed in the New York Times? Few people are as close to the Bush family as he is, and he was urging the President to get off his ass and leverage Arafat's death into an opportunity for peace. Maybe Dubya's actually listening.
The people who want Bush to just let Sharon run rampant are Cheney and Rumsfeld, the same asses who urged total unilateralism in the Iraq war (also disagreeing with Baker, I think). As I've said before, in their rush to be the anti-Clinton administration in every way possible, they abandoned even Clinton's most worthy causes, like peace in Israel and a Palestinian state.
I'd still be highly surprised if Clinton gets sent as an emissary to the Middle East. There's still plenty of Republicans who automatically associate him with Satanic evil, so I don't think it would be a very popular move.
But seriously...Bush has a huge opportunity here. Arafat is dead, Hamas has called a cease-fire to aid the elections, and many Arab leaders, including some of the ****tards at Fatah, spoke out against the nomination of Marwan Barghouti- who isn't exactly the worst, I don't think, but because he's blessed attacks against Israelis Sharon (another ****tard) will never negotiate with him. I don't know how good Mahmoud Abbas is, but I'm pretty sure he's always been against anti-Israeli violence. Sharon has said he'll talk to him. And talking is the absolutely necessary first step.
If a real, peaceful two-state solution occurs under Bush's watch, I might begin to forgive him Iraq. Or at least to believe his reasons for going in there.
