re: reuters article pisses me off

ok, when it comes to editorial content in supposed news articles, i must remove myself from the discussion as i am a republican in nyc, so i long ago lost the ability to spot that kinda thing.

No one denies that Kushner was making a political statement. It's that this writer paints that in a negative light--and the reality is both Jeffrey Wright and Mike Nichols made political statements (as well as a few others more covertly, including Shandling's comic bits).

I think you're being a little over the top on this. You're basing your decision that authors (Steve Gorman and Arthur Spiegelman) contributing to the article are opposed to gay marriage because of quotes around the word husband?
Rath is correct, the gramatical rule regarding quotation marks is as follows:
To enclose words or phrases to clarify their meaning or use or to indicate that they are being used in a special way.

No one is debating the right for gays to marry. Reuters is correct in their use of quotations around the word. They are not making a political statement in doing so.

No, Fair. As I've mentioned now like four times...the issue is not just the quotation marks, but the highlighting of that political statment and no other. And to take it even further, to say essentially that political comments are not ok at awards shows.

And, the gramatical rule of thumb is just not the case in this. He could hav easily just included the quote without referencing his husband at all. But, the author chose to include his political slant blatantly in the article. This is not a subtle issue, it is blatant.

re: reuters article pisses me off

pop,

of course political statements have hurt people in the past, but the point of the writer saying that was just to mention his point of view. I'm sorry, there is not getting around it. A writer does not put quotes around something unless she or he has a particular reason for doing so. There are ways to write an article on the Emmy's without mentioning stuff like this...especially in such a way. The writer writes "husband" and then writes essentially how the night should have been saved for better things than political comments. That is nothing but an editorial where it doesn't belong. Shame shame, sir (as they say in parliament).

The quotes aren't the issue. The article could have been written by the author without quotes, and a copywriter could have inserted them in as they went to press. Just because a journalist writes something doesn't guarantee it's going to make it into print that way.

because as you all should know, george actually wrote the reuters article. well, not wrote it per se, but merely fostered the kind of environment in which an article like that could be written. for that he's guilty, guilty, guilty!!!

re: reuters article pisses me off

What the article should have mentioned was the fact that a Hollywood awards ceremony that included a "rare political comment" is a rarity in itself. Note that he never mentioned Shandling's comment on the same subject during his opening monologue. I agree that the article does seem to reflect a certain biased attitude as if to slap Kushner's hand for his political faux-pas. But no mention of the lengthy speeches regarding AIDS in Africa, either.
