So as the FBI announces that they have caught the 20-year old hacker, I ask again, is this even a crime? I've had my E-mail hacked and I never dreamed I could call the FBI to sort it out for me. Wired weighs in saying that the hacker "might" be on the hook for some misdemeanor but I got lost reading the part about reading e-mail someone's opened but didn't delete being worse than reading the E-mail they haven't opened yet...or was it the other way around?
Anyway, really, is hacking my email as much of a crime as hacking Sarah Palin's personal E-mail?

And the website that posted the stolen E-mails? Absolutely in the clear. Some papers have won Pulitzers for less.

Good question. Does the government consider it a felony as they do with the postal system?
Probably not. Because that's a government-run system. The USPS.
You have your email accounts through various private companies.
I could see it as an invasion of privacy, but not a federal offense the way tampering with mail is.
