Does anyone know how to polish sterling silver without silver polish (i.e. ordinary household items)??
Um...I've heard that a paste made with baking powder and water works. I've also heard the same thing with cream of tarter and lemon juice.
I remember googling this a while back. Here are 3 hits that are basically the same but cover different quantities or sizes of the silver pieces you're cleaning:
(Polishing silver while wearing rubber gloves promotes
tarnish. Instead, choose plastic or cotton gloves.)
A:
Aluminum Foil, Baking Soda, and Salt. Place a sheet
of aluminum foil in the bottom of a pan, add 2-3 inches
of water, 1 teaspoon baking soda, 1 teaspoon salt, and
bring to a boil. Add silver pieces, boil 2-3 minutes,
making sure the water covers the silver pieces. Remove
silver, rinse, dry, and buff with a soft cloth. This
method cleans the design and crevices of silver pieces.
B:
Cover the bottom of a glass or plastic pan with aluminum foil.
Pour in about 1 cup boiling water and add 2 teaspoons of baking soda, and 1 teaspoon salt. Stir to dissolve. Drop the silver pieces into the liquid and make sure each piece of silverware is touching. The tarnish will slowly disappear before your eyes. Rinse and buff dry. For severely tarnished silver, more than one treatment may be necessary.
C:
1. Fill sink full of steaming hot water.
2. Mix 2-tablespoons salt and 2-tablespoons baking soda in bowl.
3. Add mixture to sink of hot water.
4. Cut a small sheet of aluminum foil and push it to the bottom of sink.
5. Dip silver items. Most tarnish will slide off. For stubborn stains, allow them to sit for up to 5-minutes at a time.
6. Rinse well.
7. Dry.
8. Store properly
