So I am part of a student cabaret show and the writer/director wants me to pick my own song, but for some reason I am blanking on one to use. He wants the song to be hopeful and idealistic, but also like I am about to fall apart. Any ideas? Thank you so much in advance!

For starters, what's your range? Are you a soprano...etc?
I am a soprano with a mezzo belt, but I have a decent lower range as well. I guess I should have mentioned that before!

Listen to your Barbra. That is her voice. She has recorded an amazing and huge catalog of songs wide ranging in type.
Just do not do He Touched Me since it has been done in every beauty pageant since 1965. Same with Happy Days Are Here Again.
Off the bat, try I'm All Smiles. I think it is on one of three albums called People, My Name is Barbra or My Name is Barbra Two. It was published in the show songbook for a fast flop called The Yearling. Barbra recorded three or four songs from the show as a favor to the composer who was a friend of hers.

What comes to mind right now is "A New Life" from Jekyll & Hyde. I think it would fit your voice, and it's a song full of hope and promise. If I think of any more, I'll post.
