im not very familiar with the show...and my high school is performing it next year.
can someone summarize the show and tell me the main female parts?

Rent it. The 1958 version, not the tv per-version.

The film is close to the stage original.

It is a show you need to know anyway.

they just did a concert version of it with reba, lillias white, brian stokes mitchell, and a bunch of other people on pbs...if you could get a tape of it, then you're set
