I don't know a thing about computers, but my husband does.
He says if you like the pretty colors of a Mac, enjoy yourselves!

Diva, you didn't help me, obviously; but, each post you make, I love you more and more.

He said that laptop looks fine, but he would ask for a hard drive that has at least 7200 RPM and a DVD burner (DVD-RW). He would also change the Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition to a Professional Edition. Also, bump up the ram to at least 1 gig.
Better?

mistress, thank you but I can't even begin to go to a computer website. I wouldn't even know where to begin to look.
Someone sent me an email with about 10 links to computers that are around my price range and the two I posted looked...the best? I don't really care much about the look but what it can actually do.
I appreciate you trying to help though.

Posted: 11/25/06 at 2:55am5400 rpm is the lowest speed and will slow your machine down to a crawl.. I wouldn't get anything less than a 7200 rpm.

Ok, thanks Diva
If the rpm is really the only "major" issue, I guess I can more put in (then again, for probably a lot more money)
decisions, decisions...

It's like the difference between DSL and dial up..
It'd be worth the money.

Posted: 11/25/06 at 3:08amthe two you listed have virtually the same specs. i dont know what id do, maybe get the cheaper one so you can afford more upgrades.

Yea, I'm going to keep an open mind. I guess spending more money and having a better computer for longer is better than buying a cheap one that'll keep getting screwed up.
Thanks

One has a DVD burner built in, the other doesn't.
BIG difference.

well i didnt say they were the exact same computer, but most of the specs are alike. if the dvd burner is important, then the 50 bucks is worth it. if sticking to your price range and ending up with a good computer is worth it, id get a cheaper one and customize. its just my take. *shrug* but my cousin always does my customizing so maybe my perspective on those costs are skewed.

My husband does I.T. for a living (Used to run the systems for Capitol Records).
Besides, Q said she wanted a DVD burner....

Posted: 11/25/06 at 3:38amim sure your husband knows computers very well. im just offering another view. Ive seen external dvd burners go for less than $50, some even as low as $20. I really think its six of one, half a dozen of the other. Buying a computer and getting upgrades, etc just requires more effort.

Posted: 11/25/06 at 9:55amI've had a PC for a while, thought it was OK but always wanted a Mac. When I finally got a Mac, I found myself saying "It's a Mac" for any reason that something wasn't working - it was not very user friendly at the start. Now that I've switched back to a PC, I do like the familiarity more. I would buy a PC, but if you really want a Mac, then buy a Mac. There is little difference if you are only focused on word processing and internet.

"5400 rpm is the lowest speed and will slow your machine down to a crawl.. I wouldn't get anything less than a 7200 rpm."
5400 rpm is NOT the lowest speed. There are many 2.5" hard drives that run at 4200 rpm. Most laptops come with 5400 rpm drives and unless you are processing video you will not notice the difference between that and a 7200 rpm drive.

Thank you everybody for all your input!
Again, I'm going to post the 2 links. If you could just say would you do or don't like about it, that would be wonderful!
I'd like a DVD burner but it's not absolutely necessary.
The 3 things I definitely need are:
Wireless internet access
I want to be able to watch DVD's
I'd like quite a bit of room to save stuff on (although I'll keep stuff on my USB drive too)
Here are the two I was looking at.

Yes, Pab, there are slowere ones, but you really don't see them anymore except at garage sales.
If she's just watching DVD then the slower ones are fine, but if you are doing more than one application, it's mighty slow.
