Well, this is it, kids. Sandra Day O'Connor is resigning from the Supreme Court. That means Bush will stick in some Pat Buchanan-wannabe extremist who'll shift the whole court to the right and get rid of our last chance of any advances in gay rights, probably for decades.

Lets not forget O'Connor was no progressive. The court was 4 "liberals" to five conservatives (three: scalia, rehnquist, & thomas are crazy far right wingers). Other than on a few womens choice issues, she was fairly far right too.
On the bright side though arcane anti-sodomy laws were struck down even with this conservative ratio.
Gay marriage probably isn't gonna be upheld...but what really needs to change for that to happen is the american publics view. Thats whats putting the US behind europe and canada on this issue.
Oh well, just another day in this Republican waste land called America. Happy 4th of July indeed.
Even obviously biased judges are often capable of recognizing, through interpretation of the law (which is their job) that certain issues are not sanctioned (or are) by our rules and laws.
And O'Connor was very good at that, causing the shift in the Court to remain mostly neutral.
geee folks, let's not wait for a nominee or anything, let's just start the chicken little rhetoric before she even steps down.

Because, of course, based on his past record, there's no way to possibly predict what kind of person Bush will nominate.
