I've been tuning into the comments section of the ABC news site and I'm rather surprised that a GREAT MAJORITY of the comments are critical of Obama. I guess he's not as popular as we would be led to believe.

Did you see the clip of him walking on AF 1 and telling the captain that he was glad to see that he "looked" just like he hoped he would look - just like someone from "central casting". Man, if Palin or Bush said something like that they'd be slammed!

There's all sorts of reasons that could explain why most of the comments are critical, louisamay. I, for one, will freely admit that I am totally enamoured of the Obama administration. But he's still a politician, and after eight years of Bush, the default suspicion that everyone feels towards politicans can only have worsened. Despite my admiration, I'm very sceptical of Obama and hope that he spends the next four years proving to us all that there's no need to be.

Also, ever noticed that the people who are happy with something tend not to bang on about it, while the people who aren't happy just won't shut up? Do you really think that a handful of comments on a website (I haven't checked the link, but I'd be surprised if there were even 100 comments on the story in question) are truly indicative of what everybody in your entire country thinks?

Plus there's the old "empty vessel makes most noise" chestnut.

Obama can't change everything overnight, and the scepticism and critiques that are emerging now are, frankly, completely healthy. Better for everyone to have lowered expectations that are either met or exceeded than for everyone to expect him to fix everything OMGNOW and be summarily let down when it takes several years to make the most significant changes. And part of the fun of a democracy is that Obama cannot do anything all by himself (well, maybe he can pee). So let's try to apportion any blame in a more fair manner, eh? :P

What's wrong with the AF1 video? I thought it was cute. He seems very personable.

I think it's best if we all expect the best but be prepared for the worst. I don't for a moment think this man is the chosen one or able to do anymore than anyone else could. I think he's more likely to try to head in a direction that I am more comfortable with. We'll see.

A more lovingly, accurate homage to you, my friend, would have not only changed the subject, but contained 650 more words. And a new subject line.

I hope this sort of thing is an anomalous blip in the Obama story as it unfolds over the next many years. I am certainly not going to shrug it off as so many of my W-voting family and online friends did the minute he started doing the exact opposite of everything he said he'd do and stood for and then lie about what he had done with a forced smile and an, "ALL politicians lie! Tee hee!"

I DO know the temptation of many people on the Right is to criticize folks who are not pennant-waving card carrying members of their team and who have the temerity to speak of better ideals and high standards to say, "If these so-called improvements can't be 100% of the time and they aren't flawless then they are complete and utter failures and therefore they totally suck," with the implication being that things would have been so much better under the fellow with no standards and definable personal moral code.

Absolutism is an impossible goal. I'll keep a wary eye out for more Obama anomalies, while knowing that even a mere 75% improvement over Bush/Cheney is going to put the country on a better course than Palin/McCain ever would have.

Good comments Weez. There are over 300 comments to the ethics reform story that papa linked to. It just surprised me as I checked out the comments on GS's This Week and other stories that so many of the posters were so critical of Obama, but I lot of what you say makes sense.

I would hate to see where the country would be today under President Palin.

We're all now responsible for everywhere we've been even after we've left.

The one thing about Obama is that he at least appears to be trying to do the right thing. It is not going to be easy in Washington's bureaucratic quagmire. DC is infested with unscrupulous people. And he may not always know what is right:
