This is shaping up to be one big ole Alawite-Sunni-Shiite-fueled regional clusterf*u*c*k.

I somehow get the impression that there's been a plan in place to oust the Assad family for sometime now and that the current POTUS has simply drawn a crappy hand. I remember a passage from W's memoir in which he revealed that Israel wanted him to order a military strike against a Syrian nuclear facility but he opted not to for a number of reasons.

The point I'm attempting to make, Papa, is that both a GOP- and Democrat-held White House have had issues with Assad's regime, right, wrong, or otherwise. I see that family either relocating to Argentina or booking a burial at sea before Obama's out of office.

That's a ridiculously frustrating article:

BUT...

Ms Del Ponte said the inquiry has yet to see any direct evidence suggesting that government forces have used chemical weapons

In other words, like everyone else, she knows absolutely NOTHING and is just speaking to the press because she wants to make it look like she knows something.

i don't think so, javero.

the russians are tied to assad and so are the iranians and to a lesser extent the chinese. even though the us is willing to hand over the wmds there to al qaeda, the russians are smart enough to realize that's suicide...mostly because a lot of the stuff is theirs.

this is not going to end well for the us. the un is going to say at the very least that there is not enough evidence to determine who used the sarin. at worst they will say that evidence shows that the rebels used it. again.

the us will be going in without un cover.

what i see happening is very, very limited strikes on out of the way facilities. followed by obama puffing out his chest and saying, "now you behave, bashar!"

israel will take the brunt of any retaliation - which this admin doesn't mind one bit because, y'know, joooooos!

what will happen, i think, is the rebels overplaying their hand and trying something really outlandish and losing what little international support they had.

I agree that Israel is primed to bear the geopolitical fallout. I'm certain that Israel's air strike of select Hezbollah targets in Syria earlier this week was a coordinated effort. Like you I'm not comfortable with my gov't colluding with al qaeda.

c'mon, pj. is it that much of a stretch to think that we were sitting on qaddafi's stores in benghazi along with missiles meant for the rebels? ansar al-sharia took them from the american embassy when they raided it. that's what that attack was about: weapons.

jabhat al-nusra got them from from their sister salafists and used them in order to convince the world to turn syria over to them so they can get more!

and the us like fools are doing their work for them to avoid admitting how badly we f*cked up.

The news last night kept saying over and over, "They do not want to do this to take Assad out of power."

Which tells me it's exactly what they want t do.
