do you know the one i mean? i've blocked out the actual brand from my memory. It's the geeky boy, who asks his crush to see something he's made, which turns out to be her likeness as a statue in fruit chews. He starts telling her about why he did it, which is stalker-like enough, then HE BITES THE STATUE'S NOSE OFF and begins to gnaw on its' face, in some weird combination of making out and snacking.
How is this romantic, or even a short "romantic comedy"? how does it sell the product ("obsessive compulsive people love our fruit chews!")? are we expected to emphasize with a person who confuses his love for candy with his crush/infatuation? or who can't keep his attention on his object of affection when that delicious candy is nearby?
Oy. It skeeves me.
I'm still coping with that creepy "Burger King" commercial when he taps on the window from the outside.
OMG!!! That Burger King commercial (well, all of them w/ that freakish King guy) are SO SCARY! I hate when they come on at night. That guy really gives me the creeps!!! I remember last year they used to air one almost every night during Conan, and I seem to remember it being about the guy waking up laying in bed w/ the King. *shudder* Freaky stuff!
yeah, the Burger King moving statue himself is creepy, but i like the Dave LaChappelle-like campy cowboy song commercial for them.
I don't know what drugs they were on when they decided the Burger King guy would be a good idea! I literally gasp or make some sort of "oh my god"/"Yikes"-esque noise whenever that comes on!
You know what else is scary?! That commercial w/ the frolicking puppet. What the hell's it for? Dell? Some computer, I think (or something w/ a wireless connection). That "I'm free/Not a puppet on a string" or whatever the little ditty is. And the marionette puppet goes frolicking through the meadow, sans-strings, w/o bending it's legs (I think it's the straight leg kicks that gets me!) It's totally bizzare, but that's another commercial that usually initiates involuntary vocal opposition on my part!

Not as bad as the guy that wakes up in bed NEXT to the Burger King - yikes! That's a scary mask!
YES lens! Freaky! That's the one I mentioned earlier that would always pop up at like 1am while Conan was on. Blech! I usually would put the timer on my TV to shut of at like 2am, and would just listen to it until I fell asleep, and I remember hearing, just hearing that commercial, almost every night, and finding it annoying (the guy's voice is really creepy too!) But when I actually saw it...I think I screamed (a quiet little scream, but a scream nonetheless!)
my thread has been jacked. At least the Burger King automaton is not like the sculptor---that kid could be in any high school or college in the country. He might be making your likeness in Twizzlers right now...
Oooh, sorry to thread jack...at least it wasn't totally off. It was still in the vein of creepy commercials!
I definitely would have chimed in on your Starburst one had I seen it. It does sound really creepy though.
And to do another mini-jack (though still in the creepy commerical category)...Have you seen that Skittles one w/ the two sheep w/ the guys' faces inserted? There definitely seems to be an excess of bizzare commercials out there!!!
Edited, because it was Skittles sheep, not Starburst.
Another commercial is the frickin' "Snuggles Bear!"
It still creeps me out.
MAD TV did a brilliant laundry commercial / horror film parody of it!
YES! Those sheep with human faces! Who ever did that concept is on drugs!!!

a girl i dated in grad school had a phobia of that Snuggles Bear. Unlucky for her, i could do the voice. And taped the music off the commercial to annoy her with. Stuffed bears stalked her car, her bed at her parent's home (they were good sports), and her locker at the gym (her trainer was a good buddy of mine). Snuggles used to leave her regular voice mail. i even once got an empty bottle duplicate of her favorite perfume and put Snuggles softener in it so she'd dab it on instead of her Ralph Lauren.
As you can tell, grad school did not challenge me enough. i had too much spare time, which now i spend on this site.
I think the Starburst ad was supposed to be funny, but they failed horribly.
And don't get me started on the BK guy and Snuggles. Eeugh...
I thought that Starburst commercial was hysterical the first time I saw it, but I did think it odd that they would parody a twenty-year old music video that a whole generation has probably never seen.
Oooohh...Good times w/ Lionel Richie! That music video was weird too!
Thank God I'm not the only one who gets creeped out over the Burger King commercial. I change the channel whenever it comes on, although with my DVR I rarely see commercials.
I hate those burger king comercials the with the king at the window... i do like the one with hootie singing about the tender crisp bacon chedder ranch... lol
but to stay on topic, that starburst one really creeps me out... if i was that girl, i'd ask to be transfered to another school. or for a restraining order.

I hate the burger king one it is so freaky. Although i usually Tivo things so its a little better and I don't need to watch commercials.
I'm only 20 and I know about the "Hello" video. Okay, so I know about it because of I Love the 80s on VH1, but still. They even have the song playing in the background of the Starburst commercial.
The King from the Burger King ads is scary. Almost as bad as the mannequin that stalks the guy that takes the Levi jeans off him. That commercial was nightmare-inducing.
