Just surfaced on Sundance, so finally caught this tale of adoption, birth parent reunion, and gay children vs. fundamentalist religion. Boy, it comes close -- close but ultimately just misses. Too bad, because it has genuinely wonderful things in it -- Bonnie Hunt, Chris Sarandon, the Sopranos Michael Kelly, and especially Tess Harper as the tortured adoptive mother torn beween her husband and her abandoned child. The locations are authentic, the characters compelling -- yet the script is in key places woefuly underdeveloped and the time leap at the end confusing and unsatisfying. Still I couldn't turn it off. Anyone else catch this? Strong feelings? It was in the NY theater about 20 minutes.

Attracative, appealing I don't want to spoil the plot, but he has a poignant if maddeningly undramatized internal journey; the character sort of implodes at a key juncture when we want to know more. I'll be curious to hear your reaction to his plight in light of the heated debate here over BROKEBACK. No similarity in stories, but some ancilliary issues about gay characaterization pop up.

Auggie, I finally saw this flick. I really enjoyed it. I was deeply moved by it, and Bonnie was as always fantastic.
Regarding the time leap in the end:
There were some deleted scenes on the dvd. A whole subplot with Bonnie's boyfriend which was completely cut from the film. A lot of the dialogue between the two women at the end was originally between Bonnie and her man. I know that seems odd, but it worked somehow, and it was in the present.
I guess the director thought that having the two mothers meet at the end was more poignant.
Anyway, a very lovely movie.
