the term "turn-of-the century"#1

so do we need to start qualifying this now?

do i need to say "turn of the 20th century" to talk about the early 1900s and "turn of the current century" to mean 2000?

It's a good question. I guess it depends what you're talking about. Most people would (I assume) figure it out by whatever event or societal mindset you're referring to.

That being said, when posting on the main board always qualify.

the "turn of the century usually applies to 1899-1900"
while 1999-2000 was the millenium.

I doubt turn of the century is often used to describe that time period

so then would 1999-2000 be termed Y2K for future reference?

it's really a fascinating subject, just a little piece of conversation but important as we have 2 centuries that most of us are aware of and speak about.

I've been qualifying it, since we entered the 21st century. Otherwise it's not clear at all.

"Turn of the 20th century" is exactly what I say and write (if that's what I mean.

I don't use "Turn of the 21st century" as much. To be clear, I would use "the new millennium" preferably.

The harder question? What do you call this decade? Radio stations chicken out on it, when they say they play music from the '80s, '90s, and... "today." What the hell is "today?" They mean the "aughts" or the "zeros?" It will be an issue when we enter the "teens." Then you can't just call this current decade "today" anymore.

dfw, to me it would be called the millenium.....I've just only heard "turn of the century" applied for 1899-1900....but who knows what they'll call the next

While we're at it, do you think anyone actually thinks "The Gay Nineties" refers to the 1990's?

Not sure on that one, Jon.

B12B, A station over here calls it the '80s, 90s and now'. My great-grandmother, who died a couple of years ago, used to comment on how she "loved the naughties, oh, we were really naughty then! (chuckle)"

I wish we used the word "aut" (or however it's spelled) to describe the year.
