I HATE it when people spell theatre "theater". What do you guys think?
It varies. I usually type theatre. But whenever I type it, I want to say "Theatray".
I was just wondering this yesterday too, lol. I spell it theatre because, well, that's how I've always spelled it, lol, but theater doesn't look as...I don't know...classy? Eh-- it's really the same both ways so whatever.

For me, if I'm talking about a playhouse, I'll spell it theatre. If I'm talking about a movie theater, I'll spell it theater.
Just a way to differenciate. (sp?)

You say potato and I say pototo....
Did you get your hair curled TheatreDiva? (Who has YET to apologize for stealing my name.)
I have been taught that the building is a "theater", but the art and the concept is "theatre".

captain, the minute I hit "post" I wondered about that......I do tend to spell it "theatre" when dealing with live productions........
if its the movies Ill say "theater"
but if its a production house I say "theatre"
but its weird because I spell color as "colour" and neighbor as"neighbour" I know its not correct grammatically in the U.S. really, but that's just always been the way I spell it....

I agree with the majority... theater is a movie theater... a theatre is well, a theatRE.

I say theater, I don't know why. I use theatre sometimes but I dont know jsut how I type it.
It doesn't matter, both are acceptable and both mean the same thing.
If you think it matters either way, you're lame.
My teachers thought it mattered. One spelling lost me marks- the other didn't. ( As a Canadian, guess which one it was)
"I have been taught that the building is a "theater", but the art and the concept is "theatre"."
thats what i was taught. i was also taught movie theater and theatre as in a live performance. but i usually just go with theatre. and when i say i'm studying theatre in college, it "upsets" me when people spell it theater. i think i have a problem!!
