Soooo I've been told as a mezzo sop to stay away from I'm just a Girl who can't say no from Oklahoma as well as I can hear the bells from Hairspray..... opinion- too overdone/out of date?

As a mezzo you have an infinite number of possibilities - a good quarter of the musical theatre pantheon, I'd say - and you're sticking with Oklahoma and Hairspray? Why?
Go download the recordings to three musicals - new or you - that you've never heard of, and repeat this process until you've found a song that you can knock out of the park.
