So I've got my ballad for auditions, but I need an up tempo now. I have a legit soprano voice and I'm developing my mixed belt. I am open to ANY suggestions. Maybe something from an older musical.

i've got "ten minutes ago
lovely night- both from cinderella. i'd just use 32 bars.
many a new day
a little bit in love- but its not really up tempo

help me out here!

I would stay away from Cinderella, there are plenty of other songs that suit your voice I'm sure. Which song were you thinking of?

Actually I bet that would work. If it's a song you're comfortable with and one you feel good singing, then go for it. I haven't heard anyone sing from Cinderella in a long long time. :]

I would strongly suggest preparing about 5 songs for college auditions - not just 2. Have a contrast to your ballad, so if it's modern do a classic period uptempo and vice versa. "Many a new day" is a good choice I believe if you do it well.

why would I have 5? I figured if i picked a good ballad, I would be able to find 16 bars of it. I'm doing Lying There from Edges. Then Cinderella for my up tempo with 32 bars. And for the full up tempo I've got The Love of my Life from Brigadoon. (thanks dramatothemax)
I'd like to keep looking for a full length up tempo tho.

Why 5? I don't have time to list all the reasons but here are 3:

1. So that the panel can see you have done your research, in the UK people don't take you seriously if you prepare the bare minimum for a very copetitive college audition. Also - if they like you they may well say - so what else have you got? If you say um nothing - it won't look good.

2. In case 5 people before you sing the song you were going to sing and the panel doesn't want to hear it yet again. I have seen this happen a lot

3. Because by preparing more than just 2 songs you will automatically build your confidence, your rep (which you need to anyway), your audition and skills - and your performances of the songs will be much more rounded. Just my personal experience working as a pro.

P.S. Your song choices sound good.

So I should bring more than required? A lot of my schools limit the audition for 5 mins, or 32 bars. and they all stress the time requirement be heeded. But it doesnt hurt to bring extra. I also dont make it a habit to listen to the people before me. But I do see where you are coming from. I'm sticking with Cinderella for sure. lol.

It's very common for people in the UK to bring more than required always. I would have though it's not different in the US really. Definitely stick to time limits. You may not want to listen to the people before you but a) you may be in the room when they audition or hear them through the door anyway or b) even if you can't hear anything the panel may still want to see what else you have when you enter the room if they already heard Cinderella 5 times before you that day. It's always good to keep your options open...

Yeah like I said in a different thread, CCM made me sing a lot more than required. It's always nice to be prepared, that way if the panel is like, "What have you got that's higher"? or "Can you show us something with more chest voice?" You can say, "But of course college panel, take your pick!"

Oh and organize your rep book by

Classic Uptempo
Classic Ballad
Contemp. Uptempo
Contemp. Ballad
Opera
Jazz
Disney

etc.
