I'm looking specifically for an uptempo broadway song that is PRE-1960s' and NOT overdone for college auditions. Its very hard because you automatically think rogers and hammerstein, irving berlin, etc, but its hard to find ones that aren't overdone for college auditions. And by overdone i mean "I cain't say no", "Adalaide's Lament", "You Can't get a man with a gun" - songs like that. Its very frustrating. I know, you're probably gonna lash out a bunch of things about overdone songs, but I'm honestly having trouble with this. Any recommendations would be appreciated.
My voice part is mezzo soprano (ie: any of those songs above would fit my voice)
Thanks so much!
um... ditto.

"The Gentleman is a Dope" from R&H's Allegro.
It is a moderate tempo and an adult (no treacle) lyric. Underdone, a semi-standard and just about as good as a song can get.
"The gentleman is a dope,
A man of many faults.
A simple Joe
Who wouldn't know
A rhumba from a waltz."
Or something like that rhyme scheme.
ah! i know that song! wee!

There is a song from Brigadoon called "the Love of My Life" that seems to be what you are looking for, also Lerner and Loewe's next musical was Paint Your Wagon. It has some great songs in it including "What's Going on Here?" which is great for a young mezzo (I think). Also "I'll Marry the Very Next Man" from Fiorello. Those are the ones that come to mind right now; hope that helps

Look at songs from Rogers and Hart's "By Jupiter". I am in a production of it right now, and all the female roles are mezzo/alto. Good belty stuffs in there.
