I was 12...and I only found out because the bullies at school were making my life hell. My mum took pity on me, and told me.

I was five when my father was telling me to make sure that my younger brother didn't see what we were buying as it was going to be a gift from Santa. Then he had the nerve to wink at me. But I think he realized his error when I burst into tears.

Though it may not be anyone's birthday, And though it's far from the first of the year, I know that this very minute has history in it, we're here!

My family considered Christmas to be a pagan deviation from Christianity, so I did not celebrate until I was an adult and I knew the truth about Santa all along.

When my mother decided to tell me Santa wasn't real, at the same time she told me the story of Sinterklaas, or Saint Nicholas, and told me the story was, at least in some ways, true.
I was devastated, but glad that it wasn't all lies.
The bullies stopped...
