Theres a really good Persian restaurant called Javan on Santa Monica Blvd. And I know some good Asian places and Mexican places if you want to know about those too.
And for everything else, I'm not sure if you want more touristy places or not... I kinda just named the touristy ones before.

Again, a lot depends on where you are going to be.
The Original El Cholo's On Western is a great place for Mexican food.
Empress Pavillion in China Town for Dim Sum.
For Cuban Food, Versaille is great, but lots of garlic.
I live on the Westside of LA, not too far from Santa Monica, and there are a couple of smaller places I can recommend on the Westside, for Thai and Mexican as well, that are pretty affordable.
There is also an Italian place called Alejo's on Lincoln and Washington that is a hole in the wall but has really good Italian food. It is not very large, so often you have to wait outside before a seat opens up.
If you want more of a fun experience, with only so-so food, there is a place called Cheese and Olive near the beach on Washington Blvd that has great rolls (believe it or not) and they sing "That's Amore" every hour. It is also pretty inexpensive.
One of my favorite restaurants, thought it is a bit loud, is Border Grill in Santa Monica. It is described as gormet Mexican.
Again, it really depends on where you are in LA.
I am sure others have suggestions and idea.

The best food is on the Westside...the valley...eh...
There's an AMAZING sushi restaraunt called The Hump in Santa Monica. It's very expensive, but you will never have sushi in your life again like this. It's orgasmic.
In West Hollywood, I like Joey's Cafe, Hamburger Mary's, The French Quarter/Market Place (one of my favorites!), and on Sepulveda and Pico, there's an incredible place that has the most amazing enchiladas and mexican food you'll ever have in your life...Tito's Tacos. Also, poquito mas is delicious and there's one in Studio City/Hollywood on Cahuenga and Lankershim. Phillipe is known to have the original and best french dipped sandwiches. It's on Olvera Street in Downtown L.A., but the good thing is, it's one block from the Union Station subway stop if you don't have a car. In Pasadena, there's an old fashioned soda fountain in a pharmacy. It's a lot of fun and you can get old fashioned soda pop drinks and milk shakes, etc. It's called the Fair Oaks Pharmacy and it's really delicious.
In Brentwood, there's an amazing, but very expensive French Continental restaraunt called Chez Mimi. Also, if you like French Food, in Studio City, the Wine Bistro and Bistro Gardens are both delicious. I'd suggest going for lunch because the food is a lot cheaper and it's so expensive when you go for dinner. Also in Studio City, Zack's Italian Cafe is a nice little cafe to have a simple italian lunch at, but nothing extraordinary. They have a nice patio that you can sit out and eat and relax on which is lovely.
As for hotels, West Hollywood is always a good place to stay. That used to be my stomping ground before I moved to NYC. Sometimes you can find very good deals on the Sunset Strip Hotels, and the good thing about that is when you go drinking, you don't have to worry about your car because you'll be within walking distance from everything. I LOVE the Standard on Sunset and Sweetzer and as much as the Sunset Strip irritates me, the Standard makes up for it.

Why has no one reccomend NoHo? You should definetly go check out North Hollywood. Lots of cute little theatres with wonderful shows. I live in the vally and I'm heading out there tonight to see String of Pearls at the Road Theatre. But theres lots of theatres and cute shops and stuff. Otherwise what everyone else has been saying sounds good. I dont know too much bout LA being from Nor Cal myself and only moved here 2 yrs ago and still in college. But I LOVE Zuma beach!! So if you love the beach go there in Malibu, the drive thru the canyon is beautiful too.
