re: why are they willing

It is real. The thing is... you have to sign up for one of the offers, and five of your friends have to sing up as well. The various companies with "offers" pay for the iPods through people like me, who signed up (I signed up for Columbia House DVD) but couldn't get any of his friends to sign up. I'm sure there are a lot more people like me out there, and it makes it worth it for them to give away the iPods.

note: My friends opted instead to pitch in and buy me a personalized iPod for my birthday, which is WAY cool.

But be forewarned. If you sign try to do one of these things, it will unleash an avalanche of email ads, so don't use an email account that you care about. Maybe create a yahoo or hotmail account just for this purpose. I speak from experience.

Also be considerate of who you beg to sign up for an offer, Liam! I stopped talking to people when all they would talk about was harrassing me to sign up for an offer. Also keep in mind, Liam, that I think you'll need your parents' credit card for it, and they may not be too thrilled.

If you want an iPod so badly and your friends aren't willing to fork out and buy printer ink or whatever, I would suggest you make a little sacrifice and give them the money to complete your offer. It's still much, much cheaper than the iPod itself, and you'll keep more friends that way.

(PS. Your spelling has improved a LOT!)

re: why are they willing

re: what Tiff said, I warned my friends that I would be doing it and if they had an objection I wouldn't. And some of them did.

And yes, I have a hotmail account for internet stuff and a comcast account for my personal email.

Just remember that things are never "free".

re: why are they willing

free iPod sites make money by obtaining your info + five of your friends and five of their friends....alone that's 26 people. Simply by putting in info like you gener, location, interest in an iPod, TV, computer, whatever they are "giving away" they obtain important info to sell to marketers. This info/data mining is sold to numerous companies. It's sorta like the Publisher's Clearing House...if you buy a magazine like InStyle, marketers know what products (fashion/beauty) you may be more interested in, etc. It's a crazy game....just be careful. I hear they do send out the iPods, but only if you sign up for an offer (which you must pay for) & all five of your friends must do the same.

****from a close friend's experience.....those "free trial offers" are NOT free!!!!!

re: why are they willing

Pinky, I can attest to that, and I think that's what they're after. Can you imagine how many people sign up hoping their friends will too, and then not meet the quota of people needed to get the iPod, and yet you've already signed up. I was going to sign up anyway... and I got the iPod anyway... but still.

re: why are they willing

I suggest you get the iPod yourself....if you have any problems with it, you can take it back. Although I've never had a problem with mine....I'm sure someone did!

As a marketing major...you get to experience how sleezy some companies can be
