Dramaqueen.. I try hard not to be pedantic about grammar and spelling, but you've pushed me over the edge tonight. This is a message board, not an instant message. You are posting your thoughts to be read by hundreds of people of whom you know nothing; not dashing off your latest half-thought to a good friend. Different standards apply. Take a little time and craft what you're trying to say. Drop the IM short hand and spell out the word. And for god's sake, *think* about what you are saying, and who your audience might be, BEFORE you hit the send button.
Given the content and presentation of your posts so far, no one over the age of 12 (no offense meant to the younger posters) is likely to take you seriously.

Posted: 5/4/04 at 11:03amI've been incredibly lucky in this life - I don't think, beyond the age of 12 or so, that I've ever been gay bashed or called names or disrespected because of my sexuality. As a child, of course, I was always beaten up for being the queer in class - I guess thats pretty standard for that age group...( I was fat, wore braces and was very awkward)...as a teen, I came out to my mother and best friends in school and then other members of my family. No one ever batted an eye or said one unkind word - I was accepted everywhere I went and in every job I've ever had. As a matter of fact, in the corporate world (my day job) I've had a handfull of men and a few women tell me that they always disliked gays until they met me. They said (almost in unison) that I don't act like their preconceived notion of what "gay" is and that I'm a nice "normal" guy (whatever THAT means!)...I've been lucky that way and can say that I'm fairly proud of the person I've become.

Well, as for dating 2 come to mind:
1. The 26 year old who still lived at home and had his Mom call me at work for dates;
2. Meeting for coffee at Starbucks and he brought his own teabag (not anything high end - I think it was Lipton or something) so he could just get hot water there.
I do have some more, but they are more of the illicit variety, and not sure they are suitable

redhot - My experience has been nearly identical to yours. I had a problem with two guys in high school, but it wasn't personal. They picked on whatever was nearby at the moment and never directly. They would vandalze something when you're not around. Eventually, they both ended up in jail.
I had a friend who died in a gay-bashing incident in Dallas back in 1989, and I remember the Paul Broussard case in Houston in 1992, I think. He was the first case of gay-bashing I remember that made national news. The guys who murdered him all attended high school just a few miles from where I grew up. I find it so strange that kids so young would have strong enough hatred to want to committ murder on a random unknown person. I know it happens, but I guess it's my age. When I was in high school, I was a charter member of Houston's first gay teen support group and there was little to no violence at my school. Bringing weapons was unfathomable. I guess I was lucky.

I, unfortunately, ended up in a town that was dedicated to duck hunting, football, and getting drunk on the weekends -- all things I wasn't interested in doing. I think I went through most of my junior high/high school years depressed, although I didn't know it at the time. Strangely enough, as out-of-place as I felt, I never let that inhibit me from getting up on a stage. When I went back to my 20 year class reunion, it came up in discussion with my former classmates. I said, "I have no idea where I got that moxie, peer pressure being what it was/is...it amazes me to this day."
I graduated from high school on a Sunday, and went to college and started doing stock on a Tuesday. Two states over. I think that pretty much speaks for itself.

I've never had anything hateful directed towards me, personally. I hate the term, but you could say I'm very "straight acting". I've been out with people who were shouted at or even threatened on the streets or in public places.
I did go to the movies last week to see THE PUNISHER (Thomas Jane has his shirt off for the entire movie so it's definately worth seeing) and there was actually a gay kiss in the movie. Some guy shouted out "Ah, **** dem faggots!" I stood up, turned around and shouted "Well this faggot's gonna kick your ass if you don't shut the **** up!" and actually got some applause from the audience.
That was fun.
