Yes, that's right! I'm now 0 for 10 at the Hairspray lottery. Go me!
But on the plus side, I'm 5 for 5 at the Rent lottery when I'm solo. Yeah. Won it again tonight. Just randomly decided to try it. I've got a ticket for the mezz on Friday because Anthony and Adam are back and I wanted to make sure I saw it. After losing Hairspray I thought and decided to give it a whirl, not expecting to win because it's gotten crazier again with them being back. And either the 4th or 5th name he called was mine! Yay! In one of my usual seats. The aisle one on the right side. I rotate between that one and the aisle on the left side. Those are the "odd" seats because they're in groups of three. Which just adds to my theory that they keep the single seat lotto cards separate so that a couple doesn't have to be split up. Or maybe I just have mad crazy luck doing the lotto solo there.
It was good overall. Anthony and Adam are great. In "Another Day" when Adam came in, he skipped right over his first verse and started in with "Excuse me if I'm off track..." He then started laughing and spun around and shook his head. Then he picked up where he should be in the music with his first verse. It was funny. Tamyra...eh...I'm not sure what to think yet. She's a very different Mimi. I'm not feeling the glitter bra thing. Just doesn't work for me. And I'm not sure if the keys got changed with Adam and Anthony and she's just not used to it yet or what, but at the beginning of "Happy New Year" she was horribly off pitch. So my jury is out on her as Mimi. I'll see how Friday is.
Merle Dandridge as Joanne is now my absolute favorite Joanne. I hadn't had the pleasure of seeing her in the role before. I'm so glad I have now! She's just the right mix of playful and serious. So many of them go too far one way or the other. LOVE her!!
On the other hand, Nicolette Hart has replaced Haven Burton as my LEAST favorite Maureen. Ugh. I know Maureen doesn't HAVE to look exactly like Idina, but she sure as hell shouldn't look like Lorrie Morgan! And her voice is a tad more on the Cheno side for my tastes. So it's really interesting to watch "Take Me or Leave Me" because I've got my best and worst right there together.
And this may be a minor quibble ~ ok a couple... But costumes... Were bellybutton rings that prominent when RENT is set? Because almsot every female character has them. I hadn't noticed it before, but tonight it was way obvious. Also...they've changed Maureen's top in "Over the Moon" and it has a date in like 2002 on it. Um, NO! It is NOT set after 2000!!! It's bugged me for a while, Maureen's new shirt.
But overall it was great. They're going to have to do something about the stage door crowd though. It is insane! They've moved the exit ~ at least for Adam and Anthony ~ to what used to be a couple of exit doors. Fine. Wonderful. BUT. People are going out the exit doors just up from the special exit and STOPPING. And blocking the theatre exits for people who are still in trying to get out. I give them until a fire marshal or truck happens to cruise by and see it before they have to come up with Plan C. I don't think this is one I'll be stage dooring. Unless I do the thing I hate doing and just hang out until the show's over and go up to the barricades like I've been in the show. Even then I'm half afraid I'll get crushed!!
One other thing... Bring earplugs! Not for the music, which is what it always is. But for the screaming. It was like being at a rock concert. The most annoying thing? A lot of the people I saw screaming couldn't have been more than 5 when RENT came out.
But I enjoyed it! It'll be interesting to see Friday night.
And on an off-topic note, my grandaddy is not doing well. He's in the hospital with some kind of infection. He's 93 and we know he has an inoperable leaky heart valve. It may be only a matter of time now.
Prayers are appreciated if you're the praying kind.
