Posted: 7/27/04 at 12:39amAdmittedly, BWayBoy88...I did. I understand why Ellen sang the songs the way she did, but I wish that she would just really sing! I have no problem with the voice when she speaks. Just...sing! Lol.

"Sutton Foster and "Gimme Gimme." It was written because of her."
"I dont think it was written for her because she was originally the understudy. Unless they wrote it inbetween the Broadway and La Jolla productions, in which case ignore this whole post."
...Actually, it was written for her. Go to this site and read one of the bottom lines:
http://www.geocities.com/milliedillmount/libretto.html
"Gimme, Gimme," the incredible current 11 o'clock number in the show, was written especially for Sutton Foster (replacing a song in the workshop called "Chuck it, John" - which was not sung by Trevor Graydon, as one would think based on the title, but Millie) and completed right before one of the final technical rehearsals for the show in La Jolla. It was written by Jeanine Tesori and Dick Scanlan."

"Please dont tell me you like Kerry Butlers butchered attempt at that part more than Ellen's. "
Actually, i did. sorry, BWayBoy88, but in all of the recordings i've heard of her, ellen greene was horrible. kerry has a gorgeous voice and made Audrey a real person, not merely a caricature, which would have been so easy to do.

Millie-I'm sorry I argued with you. I didnt know.
yourmom-I respect your opinion, but Ellen Greene's voice is no where near horrible. Even though I dont see her as a caricature, I think that it fits the show. The show is supposed to be campy. It is based on a B-list horror movie. Plus there is just something about Kerry Butler's voice that irritates me.

Patti Lupone - Don't Cry For Me Argentina.
IMHO, that song belongs to her and no one else.

IMHO, there are several songs/artists that will be forever intertwined in my mind. They are the yardsticks to which all other interpretations are measured. THey may not "own" the songs, but they've got a helluva long term lease.
Ellen Greene/Somewhere That's Green
Jennifer Holliday / And I'm Telling You
Leontyne Price / Summertime
Robert Preston / Trouble
Barbra / Don't Rain on my Parade
La Merman / No Business Like Show Business
