I'm directing this musical at my camp this summer, and I need some help.
1)What's it about, the general storyline. I know it premiered in 1963 with Lesley Ann Warren, but that's about it
2)What are the songs like?
I used the search engine and that didn't help, and Google had everything excpet for what I was looking for, so...help would be appreciated.
Thanks!
That's pretty much exactly what the story is. Do you have the CD? I have the 1999 Studio Recording, and its pretty lovely...but what ages would you be doing this with, b/c I don't really see younger kids pulling it off.
The 1999 studio recording, with the divine Karen Ziemba singing Lizzie, is the best resource you can find. The original cast recording is no longer in print.

Rent the Rainmaker since the structure is very much the same as the play. Find the cd.
The first act closer is terrific and I hope you hsve a great leading actress who can really sing and a bunch of boys who want to sing and be cowboys because of the principals there are 2 women and about 6 men plus chorus.
If you can figure out a way to cut Hungry men (or whatever the title is) do so. They did when it was done at City Opera in the early 90s.
Despite my username, I've only seen the show twice.
People have already said what I said. The score is gorgeous.
Occasionally the OBC shows up on eBay, but it's pretty expensive, so just go ahead and get the double CD version.
There is one copy of the OBC on sale on Amazon.com for $35. The Studio recording is in print and readily available.

Thanks for all your help.
And don't worry littlefish, theere are no little kids in this production. I'd say 15-23 year olds. I guess the word Camp threw you off, it's more of a Summer Community Program
And out of curiosity, what was Lesley Ann Warren's part in this?
She played "Snookie" the town flirt.
It was her Broadway debut.

Lesley Ann Warren played Snookie in the original. Kristin Chenoweth plays it on the 1999 studio recording.
Actually, the NYC Opera revival used some children. It was choreographed by Susan Stroman, who also put a few litle kids into OKLAHOMA, a few years later. Actually, her 110 IN THE SHADE choreography was a lot like her OKLAHOMA choreography, which isn't surprising, considering they are both more or less "cowboy" shows.
MEF why do you think I own that recording?? No surprises there...
All this Ziemba love warms my cold, shriveled heart.
I'm hoping Encores will do it soon, with Emily Skinner as Lizzie.
Fishie-Yes, you are that transparent.
I was in 110 In the Shade for a community theatre group. I played Noah Curry and I had so much fun with that role.
I spew Ziemba love wherever I go. Especially when I sing Running in Place in the shower...
*Has inappropriate thoughts of Fishie singing 'Running in Place' in her shower*
meffie, put it back in!!!
Hey, it's a dangerous song to do in the shower...

Karen in "110 in the Shade".
Be still my heart...
Ever so lovely in that matronly laura ingalls number.
Ahh Karen...
I think it's time to head over to the OT board and revive the KZ love thread.
Look at that sweet face...

Snookie, the role created by Lesley (no 'Ann' then) Warren at the ripe age of 17, is not in the play The Rainmaker. It was written into the show. The character only has half a song.
I saw her do this when I was a ripe 14 myself. Many of the featured actors from the Broadway run did the post-Bway tour and there she was, cute as a button.
first off- i've never seen the show and not to sound mean or anything but if you're directing the show shouldn't you know a little about it? i mean, at least you should know the music or plot...
w/e.
