The Broadway-bound teen-driven musical 13, beginning previews Sept. 16 at The Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre, is available in a different form — as a novel for kids — in bookstores now.
Composer-lyricist Jason Robert Brown and Dan Elish, who conceived and wrote the show, are the novel's authors, drawing on the plot and characters they cooked up for the stage. (Robert Horn, also a librettist on the stage show, was not involved in the novel.)
The 208-page hardcover book is aimed at kids aged 9-12, and is published by HarperCollins/Laura Geringer.

ehhhh, for Brown's sake I hope it goes well but this musical already has a Glory Days feel to me.
UMMMM..... I think the undeniably COOLER news is the fact that Jason Robert Brown has looped Mary GrandPré (of Harry Potter fame) to illustrate his other book, based on "The Schmuel Song" of The Last Five Years.
But the story was the worst part of the musical! I felt so unfulfilled at the end. They tried to pull a "For Now" from Avenue Q, but it fell on its face because it wasn't cute, hopeful, or genuine.
Granted, it's for kids 9 - 12.
They don't want 13 year-olds reading it?

Well, I suppose it can't be any worse than Twilight.
When I saw the musical.. I feel like the target audience is 9-12 yrs old. I know the creative team are saying that its for EVERYONE, but I think its a bit like a Saturday morning show!
Well~ you guys will see it when it previews in New York next month! I still say its for kids! Well see what's the general opinion!

"Well, I suppose it can't be any worse than Twilight."
People keep telling me to read that ****.
I am going to be more precise- its something like Hannah Montana's Fans will like! It has good score, but still .. I think its for kids! (well that's my opinion from someone who saw the show at Goodspeed!)
Well Good Luck to the Cast & Creative Team!

B3TA07: I'm trying to get through the first book, just because it's so hilariously awful. Not sure if I'll be able to make it...

As someone who is currently half-way through 13 (hey, it's a quick read) and half-way through Breaking Dawn, I can tell you that the former is FAR superior.
So you could say, you're at intermission right now?

Heck no, I only just passed where "Get Me What I Need" would be.
There's a lot more backstory/divorce/summer stuff.
When life gives you lemons, you make a flop musical.

Much as I resent 13's grave being dug before it starts previews, I appreciate the In My Life reference.

hahah, I just realized the irony in the fact that it isn't even for 13 year olds!
THANK you.
