Any thoughts on the quality of the film?
Is there something keeping it from being put on DVD?

I saw it years n years ago on TV- it wasn't very good. Most of the Cole Porter songs were replaced and the new ones very forgettable.
And Merman doesn't have nearly enough to do. It's been made into a Bing Crosby movie and not a very good one.
That's not a legal copy of the film on Ebay is it? I've long been wanting this film on DVD (I'm slightly obsessed with all things Anything Goes).
I respectfully have to disagree with Joe on one point.
This interpolated Merman number from the film is unforgettable, but not in the way you'd want it to be.

It's a lousy movie, period.
Paramount's 1956 remake IS out on DVD. It is watchable but not very good and has a new story, retaining five songs and interpolating "It's Deloevly," Because of the remake Paramount retitled the 1936 film TOPS IS THE LIMIT when it was distributed to television. At the very start Ethel sings the first two lines of "Anything Goes" timed to have the title appear as she sings the words. In the TV version it cuts away to a still from the finale with the new title superimposed. And THAT is all we ever hear of the title song. A few moments later Ethel sings a shortened "I Get a Kick ut of You" riding around the nightclub in a crescent moon. (That is NOT how it was done on Broadway.) Later there is a heavily rewritten version of "You're the Top" sung with Crosby...and that's about it for the Porter score. And the book has been heavily rewritten. It's a curio at best, but you can see why Ethel was never too fond of Hollywood in the 1930's.
Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!
I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com
I kinda love the "Shanghai-De-Ho."
