#01st Timer - What to See and How to See It

Hey guys, I've enjoyed reading the posts over the past few days, and thought I'd post a question for you old-timers out there.
We're headed to NYC for the first time during the week of Thanksgiving (well, really from Sunday-Friday, so we're missing most of the weekend crowds), and want to watch a show or two. Now I've been reading up on rush tickets, lottos, etc, and just wanted to ask what you would do if you were us.
We're staying down in the theater district, so I'd like to see a few shows at night, since it's a perfect way to end your evening. However, I'd really like to take advantage of the student rushes/lottos if possible, but I dont want to use up much time waiting in lines in the mornings. SO I'm wondering
1) Are there any shows where I could show up just an hour or two before the show and perhaps get student rush tickets? I've read about The Wedding Singer, maybe that's a possibility.
2) What lotteries should I attempt?
I think for sure we're gonna get Broadwaybox tickets (or something similar) for Chicago, but I'd like to take advantage of the deals as well
All advice would be greatly appreciated
Thanks!

Also, in addition, we're thinking of hitting the following:
Chicago - for sure
Rent - if we can get lotto
Possibly something off-Broadway
Maybe the Wedding Singer or High Fidelity
Pretty much anything good, we'd be interested in
So whatever has the best opportunity and that's a decent show

Mostly all lotteries are 2-2.5 hours before a show begins.
Rush is different.
And I wouldn't count on just waltzing up to THE WEDDING SINGER and getting tickets right before the show. Not since they've limited Student Rush to front-row only.
People line up early and there's pretty much no avoiding waiting for at least a little while during your mornings.

If you show up to the TKTS booth (at the Marriott Marquis) around 7:30 there is almost always NO line (at least every time I've gone), so that's an option.
Hairspray, Chicago, A Chorus Line all have standing room tickets - but only if the shows are sold out (and ACL only has 6 standing room tickets)...
Check different Broadway websites and read about what shows offer what types of tickets...
Have a great time!

So maybe i'll just attempt the lotto, but figure I'll just go the TKTS route instead.
May miss one more show than I would've possibly seen otherwise, but oh well.
THink the first night (Sunday) we may try the Rent lottery, then if that fails, head for the Spelling Bee one. IF we can't get either, we'll probably grab something via TKTS. Then I guess one night we'll catch Chicago via TKTS. And other than that, we may catch one more
Looking forward to it...never been to the northeast before
