The 2006 Pulitzer Prize Winners will be announced on Monday, April 17, at 3pm at Columbia University.

Who will be the winner for Drama?

There's no clear frontrunner and it's certainly not as notable a year for American playwrights as past seasons. Will the committee opt not to give an award? Who are the contenders?

According to Riedel's column last week, his spies say the finalists will be Red Light Winter by Adam Rapp, The Intelligent Design of Jenny Chow by Rolin Jones and Miss Witherspoon by Christopher Durang. Not the most stellar group IMO.

Here's an earlier discussion of this:

If they're going anti-war statement, they'll go Durang, and I thought Miss Witherspoon was hilarious and Kristine Nielsen's a trip.

If they're going genius, they'll go The Light in the Piazza.

Maybe they'll skip a year. They don't always give it out.

Why would Light in the Piazza win or even be eligible?

Well, it opened during the eligible year, was critically acclaimed and is at least as "American" in subject matter as I AM MY OWN WIFE was two years ago when it won the Pulitzer. There's also no restrictions on works based on earlier published material (several Drama prize winners in the past were also adaptations of novels and plays). Not sure if the committee is considering it, but it's certainly eligible.
