IMO, this happened just because they had a "big" name, established composer on their side, and they were given more exposure than other shows (ie.: Today show).
There are so many other unquestionable deserving shows and performers which were overlooked. Apparently the Tonys are losing focus that nominations should not be for the "most popular" or overexposed, but for true quality in performance and material. So sad =[

Of course there is always the slight, off the wall chance, that Billy Elliot is simply the superior show. I've seen almost all the competition and in my mind, that is the case. Nothing comes close to it.
