It seems to me (and what do I know? Nothing, obviously), that the thought of Tony competition would be less important than keeping the cast intact and the momentum of the show moving.
You're correct, Margo, RENT had it's off-Broadway run at nearly the same time as SPELLING BEE. That transfer was a matter of striking while the iron was hot, and if the reviews for SPELLING BEE are terrific, It would probably behoove them to move now, as opposed to waiting because the Tony competition this season may prove stiff. (Besides, who knows what will happen next year? Waiting doesn't necessarily guaranty them anything.)
