I'm happy to defer to your recommendation, given your considerable experience with this.  However, it would be nice if your grasp of the concept of respect matched your mastery of airport commutes.

Even if you make it, you'll be riddled with anxiety.

Look I'm not trying to say anything but my opinion. You don't have to get there 12 hours before your flight, but I am just saying what I would do if I was in this situation. You obviously have a different opinion, which is fine, but your treating me like I'm useless. Last time I checked this was a board where everyone can say what they want. The poster asked for opinions and I gave mine. That's all.

You are not useless at all but I actually think it's kind of important to sort out the actual facts against which your opinion has its place. The fact is that the OP wants to take the subway and you gave information based on taking a taxi. (For the record, I would NOT advise anyone to take a taxi under these circumstances.) The fact is the subway takes and airtrain take an hour. Even accounting for a late start, slow people blocking you in Times Square etc, and a few people ahead of you at the luggage place, you will be on the subway by 5:15. Let's add another 15 minutes for miscellaneous delays. You now have 1h30 before your plane from the moment you walk into the terminal. That's an abundant margin of error, and personally I don't like the idea of depriving someone of a show they want to see because of over-reaction to risk, which is not to say I question your own choices. I have a friend whose family goes to weddings 3-4 hours in advance and sit in their car until it starts, to make sure they don't miss it. And I love them dearly anyway.

Two-show days are never about desire. When I lived in California, I did them to maximize my time. When I moved to NYC, I almost never did them. And now that I'm 90-120 minutes outside of NYC, I do them again. This past weekend, I saw Color Purple and Fiddler on the Roof, which was a pretty intense day. I'd recommend making sure the shows on a two-show day are different. A play and a musical. A fun time and a serious turn. Or at least a one-act and a two-act. I also spend the time after the first show (if I'm in town alone and not hanging out with someone), really reflecting on the first show, reviewing the Playbill, and locking in the experience, so that it doesn't blur into the second experience, or get shut out.

But if I had to pick between a two-show day or a frantic airport race that may not end well, it's really no contest.

why are you perpetuating this "frantic airport race" meme? It's really a disservice to people who are conscientiously trying to plan a trip and read this.

I was more wondering why the notion of seeing two shows on an alternate day was not being mentioned as the more viable option, since it became all about whether they could see a show on the last day and still make the flight in time. Given the choice, the two-show day when no flight is happening gets them the extra show and no flight concerns. Seems the best of both worlds.

This simple request for travel advice has turned into quite the bizarre thread with more drama than a soap opera. No surprise to see Hogan contributing much of it. People, relax...

I wouldn't try it. There are just way too many things that can go wrong.

"I'm thinking of catching a 2pm show on Friday, 12/30, pick up my stored bag at CBH luggage storage and take the subway to JFK at 5pm for an 8pm flight."

Do you fly quite often? I do and very often get TSA Pre-Check which gets you through the security line much faster, especially during holiday season. This would come in handy in your situation. You can also buy TSA Pre-Check (5 yrs) but that is only worth it if you really do travel by plane very often. As others have mentioned, taking train to JFK is much better and costs a heck of a lot less. I see no reason to be concerned if you leave at 5:00pm for 8pm flight if you take the train.

Thanks to everyone who replied! I really appreciate your help.

I'm going to try (risk) a 2pm show before my 8 pm JFK domestic flight on Friday, Dec. 30, on Jet Blue. Here's what I've done since getting your tips: (1) I've applied and gotten approved for Global Entry which comes with TSA Pre-Check and (2) I rescheduled The Humans to 2pm, Dec. 30, and chose an aisle seat (Mezz G2) so I can leave the theater quickly.

I'll try to pack light so I can (hopefully) stuff my backpack under my seat during The Humans or bag check it as @Anakela suggested. I may also ship my bag home as @Olivia11 did.

As @haterobics mentioned, I may end up seeing 2 shows in one day. If I decide to see Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812, I can only see the matinee on Wed., Dec. 28. I've been listening to the recording on Spotify and the music is growing on me.

So far, here's my schedule:

  • Mon., Dec. 26, 8pm - Dear Evan Jansen
  • Tues., Dec. 27, evening - Undecided (The Color Purple with Cynthia Erivo? Falsettos? Les Liaisons?)
  • Wed., Dec. 28, 2pm - Maybe Natasha (will wait for reviews) and 8pm - Front Page
  • Thurs., Dec. 29, 7pm - The Present
  • Fri., Dec. 30, 2pm - The Humans

Thanks again!

Terracentric, It has also been my experience, flying out of JFK, that flights do not depart on time.  So hopefully, you will have some padded time.

I've never not been granted it in the 3-4 years I've had NEXUS (the US/Canada trusted traveler program that also gives you TSA PreCheck) but just a note that PreCheck is not always technically guaranteed, whether that means they randomly don't grant it for that flight, the PreCheck line isn't staffed in that terminal at that hour, etc. - but it definitely makes traveling by plane much simpler!

If you already booked your plane tickets, don't forget to amend your reservation/airline profile to include your trusted traveler data, otherwise the system won't know to add it to your boarding pass.

I don't have time to read through all of the replies to this, so I don't know if anyone else already suggested this or not ... but if I were you, I would call Telecharge and ask if you can switch the Humans (95 minute show with no intermission) to 12/30 matinee.  You would be out at 3:35 pm and that would give you plenty of time to get to the airport.  And then schedule something else for the time slot you originally had set for the Humans.

That is where the Humans is scheduled three posts above yours, on their itinerary.
