Something I'm doing this year is I'm trying to listen to a different musical a day, everyday, all year long! Some of these I'm listening to for the first time. Others (probably most of them) I'm re-listening to but, I'll listen to the whole album again. I wasn't gonna post it and just keep it for myself, but I had fun talking about it last night so I'm gonna post them. Here are the first 10:
1/1- Rocky.
Not the worst show. F*CK it, I'll say it: I liked it. Whenever you forget it's a Rocky musical it's actually awesome. 6/10??
1/2- Martin Short: Fame Becomes Me.
God, I love this show! I saw this on Broadway and it's as good as I remember. 8.5/10??
1/3- Silence the Musical.
Funny. Not much to it other than funny numbers but nothing I can sing along to. 5.5/10??
1/4- Spider-man: Turn Off the Dark.
F*CK this show. The order of the songs on the sound track didn't make sense so I looked it up and ****ing Bono rearranged them to fit a rock album. No! You can't do that! You monster! Aside from my initial hatred, the musical itself is awful and has nothing to do with Spider-Man or Musical Theater. 0.5/10??
1/5- John & Jen.
Oh man, the second half of this album is all tears. It's so ****ing sad. I really liked it. I'd love to see a good black box production of this! 7.5/10??
1/6- Spring Awakening.
I know this show too well. The music is fun, soulful and moving. The book is outdated, slow and ****ty. I could listen to Mama Who Bore Me and Touch Me on a loop for the rest of my life. 7.5/10??
1/7- Now.Here.This.
It's the spiritual sequel to [title of show] so, I loved this. This has such great replay value, songs like Members Only, Give Me Your Attention and Archer were such fun to listen to. I couldn't get enough! What Are The Odds? Is such an amazing opener! 9/10??
1/8- [title of show].
I loved Now.Here.This. so much that I went back to listen to [TOS]! This is one of my all time favorite shows. I saw this once off-Broadway and 3 times on Broadway. I love this. This show is my spirit animal. 10/10??
1/9- American Psycho.
I found a bootleg of a performance from the West End online. It's good. They definitely have Patrick Bateman's voice down pat and I love the use of popular songs in the show. Not A Common Man and This Is Not An Exit are highlights for me. Duncan Sheik trying to be funny with some of his lyrics falls flat and Matt Smith's voice isn't great. I can't wait to see Benjamin Walker in it this season! 6.5/10??
1/10- Sunset Boulevard. This might be Andrew Lloyd Webber's best score since Evita, which I think only came out 3 years earlier so... It's not that impressive. I think he gets ton of **** because man when he's bad, he's ****ing bad but, this isn't bad I like it a lot. It's one of my favorite of his shows. Some of the lyrics are to be desired. Glenn Close's performance oozes out of the speaker, she's amazing. 7/10??
1/11- Preludes.
Okay, so Bowie died, I listened to Blackstar as a substitute for Lazarus but later that day they announced that they're getting a cast album so I listened to: Preludes. It's less of a musical and more of a play with musical. That being said I ****ing loved it. The use of music with spoken word is masterful. Your Day and The Prelude might be my favorite songs about creating art since Tick, Tick... Boom! or Sunday in the Park with George. Some of album doesn't do it for me but most of it I loved! 7.5/10??
1/12- Sweet Smell of Success.
The story is dark. I liked it. The music was fun. I love Brain D'Arcy James. The music was always interesting, just a ****ing bummer. Better the Goodbye-Girl, not as good as A Chorus Line. 6/10??
