The people I see having a real problem with this will be the taxi drivers who are trying to move across Broadway on those cross streets. You know how people obey the cross signs at the corners now? And how they all move to a corner to cross when the theatres let out? You can imagine what it will be like when they get used to having those full blocks to themselves.

I'm really having trouble seeing this, I guess time will tell.
I like this. I always seem to end up walking in the street around Sephora because the sidewalks are too jammed.
"i already walk in the street whenever i feel like it. Now he's going to encourage all the stupid tourists, who already don't know how to walk on a sidewalk, to spill their corn fed cluelessness into the street"

THANK YOU!
I completely agree. I often walk in the street to avoid the idiots that don't know how to use a sidewalk. Whatever, I'll just push people like I usually end up doing anyway.

I also think it's a bad idea. For people who aren't on vacation, and are on their way to work, or on their way to see a show and already live here with no interest in stopping to see the sights, this is going to be an inconvenience.

I don't have a problem with tourists. They fuel our economy. So I don't think it's smart to be mean to them. But tourists have different motivations for walking up and down those sidewalks.

Locals just want to get to their destination, which is why it's great that we can use the street right now to speedily get to where we want to be while the tourists can use the sidewalk to stop and take pictures, etc.

This is the only aurgument I see in favor of this idea -- it would be nice to have ANY place to sit! Otherwise, I agree with the concerns about congestion, taking away a convenient access route for taxis, and the effectiveness. Question: Does this mean Broadway would have to relinquish the title to 'longest uninterrupted street in America?"

tbd2, i agree with you. sorry it could be a block or two less. keep the trees out of times sq.
Good idea for me, be good to see Times Square pedestrian friendly!
		     			Hey Charleston,

What are you - my mother? And where do you get off shouting at me? Try peddling your parental plan ahead motif elsewhere. Where were you with the contraception when I needed it? Now I've got octuplets crowding the damn sidewalk in their octapram. Luckily my illegal au pair handles the kids while i'm rushing down Broadway in my taxi to make it to the theater in time.

are you at all familiar with the concept of "tongue in cheek"?

more power to you TheaterBaby! the one good thing about this stupid plan is that after you push the cockeyed tourists out of the way if you happen to knock any of them down you'll have a wide open Broadway on which to escape from them with no worries of being struck and killed by some stupid out of town driver in their SUV.
I think it will be a great idea!
Not quite sure how this will work. Having lived right there, anything to make it easier to walk around and through that area is a good thing. But, I don't see the real appeal. After you look at the bright lights and shiny buildings and such, there's not much to do outside. And the overall atmosphere is not conducive to sitting outside and relaxing, save for a lovely spring day or late at night when there aren't hordes of people. They did that out here in CA at 3rd street and it's a great place to hang out, shop, etc.
Ugh. If it weren't for the theatres, I would never go there anymore.
